Summary
He’s been the driver, the wallet, the shield, the joke they all laughed at.
He’s carried their wounds, their secrets, their lives on his back for years, asking nothing in return but the chance to keep standing.
But even the strongest shoulders have a breaking point.
When Steve Harrington walks away from one last careless night, no one follows.
By the time they notice he’s gone, it may already be too late to ask the question none of them ever thought to voice:

Summary
Steve did not tilt his head, did not move closer. He only let himself lean the tiniest bit heavier into Eddie’s side, like a plant toward sunlight. His hand slid, slow and unsure, until his fingers found the edge of Eddie’s and curled there, not quite a full grip, but something.
“Thanks,” he whispered, so quietly Eddie almost missed it.
“For what?” Eddie murmured back.
“For… letting me just be–me. I guess?” Steve huffed a small laugh. “That’s so lame. Forget I said that.”
Eddie squeezed his hand, just once.
“Anytime,” he said.

Summary
Steve startles, *hard,* the razor falling to the floor as he yelps, practically leaping out of the chair. His eyes are wild, almost manic, when they meet Hopper’s, and glazed with unshed tears.
Hopper doesn’t know where to start.
Steve does—with deflection. “Oh, shit,” he says, voice thin and shaky. “I’m late to pick up the rugrats, aren’t I?"OR
Steve and Hopper have a hard conversation about how exactly you cope with shit when the world keeps trying to end on you and your huddle of teenage friends.

Summary
“You were the King of Hawkins High -- what have you ever lost, huh?" snapped Jonathan. "A little sleep? Your fucking prom king title? Give me a break. I’m sick of you acting like you know what we’ve been through, you weren’t even there when it started!”
Steve stood up. “Shut up, Byers.”
