“Obviously. I’d sooner—” Maybe she doesn’t have the energy for a creative metaphor. Meryl slumps back against the railing. “So if you didn’t ask because you wanted to dance—”
“You wanted to. Seemed like ya wanted somebody to give ya permission, or somethin’.”
“I didn’t…” Meryl’s arms, already crossed, cross even tighter. “I didn’t want to dance. I was just keeping the time. There’s a difference.”
Wolfwood comes up with a solution when he realizes Meryl is uncomfortable dancing in public.

When Milly catches on to Meryl's pattern of skipping dinner due to overwork, she begins requiring that Meryl eat dinner with her each evening. The brownies had been the biggest and best part of the lesson, Milly telling her to have as much as she wanted, and the hours that had passed afterwards, Meryl curled up at Milly’s side warm and well-fed and drowsy, are a memory Meryl returns to in her own bed sometimes, whenever she feels a little lonely.
She hadn’t expected Milly would share their recipe.
Meryl finds herself fighting a little petty jealousy when Milly makes brownies for the office.

Milly has gotten into the habit of worrying about her superior.
Well, it has long since been known to her that Meryl would rather her not view her in that way. They’ve traveled together far too long for Milly to call her ‘Ma’am’ anymore. Honestly, she feels that she’s close enough to her not to, and she’s been referring to her as Meryl for quite some time now. But she’s gotten herself into the habit of viewing Meryl as her superior anyhow, as an ideal. Meryl’s independence, while so shocking and even a bit offensive to her when they first met, has become a quality Milly can say that she admires. This makes it all the more worrying that Milly is looking after her now. Meryl’s always done a wonderful job at taking care of herself, for such a young woman with a disadvantageous stature. And yet, Milly is carrying her on her back, as Meryl rambles drunkenly.
