Summary
Lan Wangji had followed the beast’s trail to the farthest border of Qinghe. He stood at the beginning of a wilderness that was little known to anyone in the Jianghu. The air from the world beyond his was clean, sweet, mild. Behind him was the world he knew, which he struggled to keep breathing in.
Perhaps the air on the other side would be easier.

Riddled with grief and guilt, Lan Wangji follows a creature's trail beyond the furthest reaches of the Jianghu. The temptation to leave his past behind wins, and he flees from his life. And finds someone who catches him as he falls.

Wei Ying leans on the bar. “So, what can I get you, Lan Zhan? Do you want your signature drink, or do you want to try something new?”
Lan Zhan gets lost in the pretty face pushed in less than a foot from his own--and in the giddy realization that Wei Ying remembers his name. “Something new,” he says finally.
“Great! It's harder since you don't do alcohol, but I like a challenge.” He winks at Lan Zhan before spinning around to peruse the shelves. “Are you more of a sweet or sour guy?”
Lan Zhan’s taste in beverages pretty much begins and ends with green tea, but today is a day for risks. For climbing out of his rut and trying new things. He decided that in the last two minutes. Perhaps Wei Ying's enthusiasm is contagious.
Or Wei Ying is a bartender who makes terrible drinks. Lan Zhan keeps going back to his bar anyway.

He let his gaze linger on Wangji for a moment, studying the faint flicker of amusement in his otherwise stoic expression. Despite everything—the cold demeanor, the stiff propriety—Mingjue couldn’t deny that Wangji was interesting. Not in the loud, obvious way most people were, but in a way that made you want to sit still and figure him out piece by piece.
And if it weren’t for this whole ridiculous marriage arrangement, Mingjue thought, he could almost imagine them as friends.
