It was from the stables that Santa watched the alpha prince.
There was a narrow window set high in the wall, meant for light rather than views, its glass warped and clouded with age. From the right angle, if Santa stood on an overturned bucket and ignored the ache in his calves, he could see into the outer training yard beyond. Snow had been trampled into gray slush there, marked with the scars of countless drills.
