“Hi,” Robin smiles at him. “Didn’t know you were coming”.
Steve shrugs. He waits for her to put her seatbelt on before he shifts the gear and starts driving. “Didn’t know I was coming either. My mother finally called”.
After the earthquake debacle, Steve came home one night from work to find both his parents at home. His mother asked him to sit down and told him that they bought a house in Chicago. When Steve asked to stay in Hawkins, he didn’t expect them to understand. Instead, his father said that they needed to think about everything. He has been waiting for their call since then.
OR: Steve's parents leave Hawkins, and let him keep the house temporarily. Robin moves in.

Summary
After the mall burns down and Robin finds herself in a world where monsters are real, she has Steve. Steve and his stupid hair and his big smile and his sad eyes. Steve who she thinks she loves. Her best friend.
It shouldn’t have happened really, that she started genuinely liking the guy. As soon as she’d seen her roster sheet and known who she’d be working with the majority of the summer she’d almost turned around and begged off it. Now here she is and the guy has a face mashed beyond all recognition and she barely has a scratch on her and she should just go home. But she’s waiting for him outside a hospital room and she thinks they might be friends.
She’s sitting kind of off to the side wishing the guy she’s waiting for could come and sit outside with her even though that’s entirely illogical. Robin is pretty sure she’s meant to feel sort of awkward around Steve right now because he had confessed he liked her not more than three or four hours ago and then she had told him what she was and sure, in the moment of adrenaline and Russians and interdimensional monsters he had accepted her, but did that extend to her waiting outside hospital rooms for him?

“Not the norm.” She shakes her head. “If you’re really just friends, that’s fine, but I’m worried Steve won’t see it that way, and, well… I don’t want you to break his heart.”
“Not a heartbreaker,” Robin promises. “It’s sweet, though, you looking out for him.”
“Funny how it seems like we keep trying to set each other up with him,” Nancy offers to lighten the mood. “I guess neither of us really know what he needs.”
“I guess,” Robin says tightly, but she’s pretty sure she’s known what he needs since that night in the bathroom. She’s pretty sure he does too.

Kids pound their legs and any nearby tables, some stomping wildly in place and others simply screaming until the noise bouncing around inside the gym seems to make her bones rattle. Robin halfheartedly pats her thighs along to the horrendously out of sync drumroll, eyes narrowed and jaw clenched. It’s going to be him. It’s going to be him, and she’s going to lose what’s left of her sanity, and then since he’s single now he’ll take Tammy home and they’ll have gross sex and he’ll definitely suck at it and Robin could totally do better even though she’s never kissed anyone before. She’d just be better by default because Steve sucks.

“I don’t owe you a favor,” he replied immediately, although he had a sinking feeling that he did. It sounded familiar.
“I recall you agreeing to the bet a while back that you didn’t think the kids considered you a part of their group,” she reminded him. The smirk hadn’t left her face. “And after the whole… moving in with the Byers thing, it’s definitely been proven that you’re a part of their group. I dare you to say that you’re not in front of them.”
