It's hard to miss what you don't remember. Unless it starts showing up at your front door.

"He’s a damn child. He doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about,” Jos spits, stabbing a finger at the conference table like it’s Charles himself.
Max sits, arms crossed, one knee bouncing under the table, eyes fixed somewhere in the middle distance.
Max Verstappen has spent his life fighting. For wins, for titles. Now, with two world championships under his belt, he’s fighting for his third against a new rival: rookie prodigy Charles Leclerc.

Thirty seconds. The video is thirty seconds, and it takes two words, right at the end. Two words that are soft, gentle—you’d have to strain to hear them, but Lando doesn’t need to. He can’t hear anything else. They rattle around in his head, vision blurred, mouth dry.
His hands shake, but then again, they always do.
“Fuck—Lando."

Handling his vampiric urges had always been easy for Oscar. Hunt animals, take just enough to survive, set them free again. Maybe use a blood bag, if it's not enough.
It stops being so easy when Lando invades his dreams, tempting him through the most casual actions during the day, until the only thing he can think about is burying his canines deep into Lando's neck. And, surprisingly, he's not the only one who seems to enjoy that idea.

Summary
On the life of his whole career, Lando would swear he doesn’t mean for it to become a routine, the café.
Only, on Monday, Lewis stops technique to compliment Max’s extensions during centre adage – Max’s – and then directs his stupid, stuck-up, closed-lipped grin at Lando when he fucks up the timing of the same combination during his group’s rotation at it. And Lando can’t sit around the lobby avoiding everybody’s eyes after, feels like he’ll suffocate if he does, so he wraps his scarf around his neck another time and trudges the same four doors down, shoulders through the same door.
“Morning!” Oscar calls from behind the counter.
(Alternatively: Lando is a ballet dancer in timeout. Oscar works in a coffee shop. This is a Hallmark Christmas movie.)

The way he took the precise step so he was completely blocked, it couldn't be a coincidence. That move was calculated.
He knew he was being watched.
"Fuck," Max muttered.
"What is it?" Ricciardo said over comms.
"He's seen me."
Or, Max is a trained assassin with a target that keeps outsmarting him.
Unbeknownst to both of them, there are many more things they have yet to uncover.

If it were any other swimmer next to him swimming the anchor for his competitor, Max would feel pretty confident in bringing home the win for the team. But it’s Charles. Charles can perform miracles in the pool, and Max knows to never underestimate him.
Max takes a deep breath, ignores Charles getting into position on his starting block next to him. He waits, watches, waits, watches.
Not yet, not yet, not yet, not yet.
Max’s teammate extends his arms out in front of him for his last stroke before he touches the wall. He times it perfectly.
Now.

“Max,” Charles said, Max’s blue eyes reflecting Charles’s own fears. “Please. What happened?”
Max stared at him for a few long seconds before he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his expression twisted into something painful and afraid.
“There was a bomb.”

[Instagram story: The video shows a behind the scenes clip from their photoshoot at Silverstone. The person holding George’s phone had captured some of the moment when Max had begun to chase George down the track. The clip cuts off just before Max ends up on top of George. Caption over the video reads: ‘Forgot to share this one earlier in the year 😊 Good luck this weekend! @maxverstappen1’]

NORRIS: Are you *eating*?
PIASTRI: Am I-? Of course not.
NORRIS: Is it good?
PIASTRI: Focus, Lando. No other cars around. Leclerc ten seconds behind, slow lap. After Leclerc is Tsunoda, timed lap, Turn 13.
Let’s do a quick one.
NORRIS: On it. Bon appetit, Piastri. [static, a gasp] Pastry!Or, Oscar is Lando's new race engineer for the 2024 season, and they stumble into a coworkers with benefits situation. And then things just keep getting more and more complicated-- but hey, the season is going pretty well!

Yellow carnation dominates the composition, the flowers still standing tall and proud, starting to show some signs of wilting at the top: disappointment.
You fooled me once, Oscar thinks, swallowing a sour lump that has taken permanent residence in his throat. He stokes the flowers, the petals soft and thin, translucent like tissue paper, and then smothers one into his balled fist. I’m disappointed too, he pictures himself replying. I’m disappointed that I allowed you to walk away. He would never tell Lando the truth, though. He would never go as far as admitting to him and, partly, to himself that he has cheered for Lando, at some point, that he was rooting for the bad guy to get away with his crimes. He reckons Lando would guess it, somehow. He is rather good at guessing him.Oscar gets back to work, on the tail of another assassin. Lando gets defensive and jealous and, as the walls close rapidly in around them, Oscar will be forced to make a life-changing decision in a game of double deceptions and coded messages hidden in flower bouquets.

George raised one hand, fingertips tingling with the anticipation of being placed on Alex’s cheek. Alex didn’t move as George’s palm hovered over the side of his face; he held George’s gaze defiantly, not flinching or blinking, like he was challenging George again. Challenging George to touch him. To try and kiss him again.
He was just so infuriating.
George let his hand drop back to his side.
The smallest smirk appeared on Alex’s lips, like he took that as a personal victory. I knew you wouldn’t dare. George could hear the thought.
It took every last ounce of subversion in George’s body for him to turn around and make his way back to his car, leaving Alex standing alone on the front stoop.

“Hey Oscar.” Came the unmistakable accent of Lando’s voice over the megaphone of the buggy parked one-hundred fifty metres down the shore. Oscar rolled his eyes. If Lando wanted to speak to him he should follow protocol and use the radio instead of sharing his conversation with the entire beach.
“Hey Oscar,” Lando repeated, the volume turned higher this time, causing the speaker to feedback. Oscar let out a sigh and grabbed his own megaphone.
“What?” He asked pointedly.

“Are you done bothering this guy? I didn’t think blonds were your thing.” Pierre says through a mouthful of pizza, causing Charles’ eyes to go wide and dart back to Max, who is finding the whole situation rather amusing.
“Merci, Pierre, this is Max Verstappen who works at Vasseur’s and he is Dutch. He has been boring me with his whole life story.”
or:
Seasons pass, and fate keeps throwing Max and Charles together.

Pierre is at the top of his game, pulling lead roles at the Paris Opera House like it’s nothing. He is set to star in another year’s rendition of George Balanchine’s Nutcracker as, obviously, the Nutcracker. Unfortunately for him, this year’s production will be casting pointes and flats… not men and women. Anyone has the potential to play opposite him as Clara, maybe even that gorgeous man he saw in casting.

'Every lover is a soldier. Love is a warfare.'
I've changed this description a thousand times. None of them felt honest. I just wanted to read a story of broken people finding each other and dancing to good music in the middle of nowhere. I also wanted to figure out how to write about consuming love. The beginning isn't great, it slowly gets better. It's dramatic, extreme, a very unrealistic love story. But it is a love story. And there are a few lines that make me smile.
(If you're back for a reread, might I interest you in a new story: If I Had a Boat - 2024)
