Summary
There were a few rules that applied. First, it didn’t matter how early you met your destined. The youngest person recorded to show color after meeting their destined was sixteen, and it was accepted as common knowledge that sixteen was when one was “of age” for that next stage in their life. Second, it had to occur via touch, skin-to-skin. Brushing their jacket with your fingertips didn’t count, nor did bumping shoulders. Something like a handshake was a good example, as long as there were no gloves. And lastly, though Edward assumed this wasn’t a real rule, it always seems to occur when least expected.

Summary
Roy sleeps through the first four days of the trip, which, if he’d been thinking about it at all, is about what he would’ve expected. He contributed nothing to preparations, slept through the flight, passed out as soon as his face hit the unfamiliar mattress; they’re only out here in the first place because of a respiratory infection he couldn’t fully shake until less than a week before their departure, and frankly if pressed to identify where they are more closely than “south of Zhejiang” he wouldn’t be able to give a better answer. Ed’s been in and out - sandy, usually damp, putting some sweating drink or a skewer of shrimp or half a coconut full of pineapple cubes in Roy’s hands and saying things like “Some guys off the beach invited me on their yacht, wanna come?” - but Roy doesn’t really wake up for it in any real sense until halfway through the week.
