Somewhere along all the yelling, cursing, and getting black-out drunk, he starts to realize that this stupidly earnest and infuriatingly odd dead man might just be the only thing capable of pushing him to live again.

Connor and Hank's conversation outside of Kamski's goes a little differently. Connor was connected to Simon when he died, when he shot himself. He knows what it feels like, and that fear of death lingers in his code. So of course when Kamski asks him to shoot Chloe, he can't do it. When he tells Hank he is not a deviant, Hank pushes him as far as he can.

Envy wasted no time before grabbing a fistful of his hair and slamming his head into the wall. It didn’t knock Mustang out, but it was a close thing. The alchemist’s expression twisted with pain, but he was still stubbornly smiling.
“You will wish,” Envy spat, “that you had gone with them.”
