On the other hand, she falls in love with Elphaba much like how you might jump from a cliffside: hesitantly, entirely resistant, and then plummeting into it all at once.
All of this might, admittedly, be much less terrifying if she knew how much they love her in return.

This isn’t the first time Maxwell Gotch has been pinned to the ground by Torse. This is the first time it’s scared him, though.
Even during their sparring matches, where neither would concede, where they both gave as good as they got, he never found himself in fear of the other. Even when Torse’s knife-like arms would press against his skin, even when he would bleed through his hand wrapping to land a hit, even when Torse’s punches would shatter the wood of the ship—if anything, these things thrilled Max, as mortifying as it was to admit.
Now, as the sharp edge of Torse’s bladed knuckles crash sharply against his cheek, his own blood splattering onto the scrap that made up the floor, he finds that the thrill has something more skittish hiding in its undercurrent.

She squeezes her eyes shut, presses a button. Bursts of fireworks go off behind her, blinding the thing from the inside. No defense. She'll do whatever she can to keep this thing at bay, to keep it from attacking her friends. Her family.
She might die here.
Or
Olethra jumps into the mouth of The Straka and comes to terms with death. Too bad Torse and Max decide to jump in after her.

Maxwell just tuned out the conversations instead, glancing around the street. It was dark, and unlike home, where the street lamps took up entire avenues, and the light pollution was so strong you could barely make out the clouds, here, the stars were scattered on full display. Not that Maxwell liked stargazing. He didn't. But he couldn't help his mind from straying, and his legs, too, as he glanced around the street and felt himself drawn towards the patches of voices outside of the bars and those establishments his dad would call rowdy-
"Where are you going?"
Maxwell turned around quickly, expecting his father's stern expression or Samwell's weary one, but instead just found himself facing the wide-eyed girl - Olethra - from before.

When Olethra's parents pass tragically, Comfrey isn't approved instantly for custody. Instead, Olethra is taken in by a rather different family - but the Gotches stay on the ground, and Olethra... adamantly refuses to.

Summary
Maxwell cut his teeth early on, wrestling Johnwell out of the way for first access to the washroom or shoving the door open on Hatwell, who always obnoxiously took the longest getting ready even though he always ended up looking stupid anyway. It prepared him well for university dorms, where violence was less common but struggle for the communal showers was no less harried.
The challenge comes now, of course. Even a large ship like the Zephyr has only so many facilities, and he’d, maybe presumptuously, left his towel and soap in one of the private showers, the very one Olethra MacLeod had taken up nearly an hour ago.

The sound of rustling metal scraps, steps of familiar shoes that were unfit for Zern’s landscape, getting closer. Closer. Torse pushed all his circuitry to the hand that felt like it was closest to the sun, imploring it to move and summon his Maxwell.
A scrape of metal and a gasp.
“Torse! My good man, what has happened to you?”
Maxwell’s fingers brushed debris from Torse’s helm, finally discovering his wretched, useless body. Torse tried to get his vision strip to flicker on and allow him his sight. He saw nothing, still trapped in his world of darkness.

Merlin accidentally reveals his magic to Arthur. It goes about as well as he can expect. Only Arthur is still furious about the lies between them, and refuses to let Merlin back into his role as manservant. So Merlin requests to be made a knight. If Arthur can't trust him to be a friend, at least Merlin can continue to save his life. Their friendship hangs in the balance, and it is unclear whether they are going to come through on the other side stronger than ever, or broken beyond repair.
