Subaru notices the way Saku avoids sitting beside her, the careful distance he maintains, the smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes. She doesn't understand why he's pulling away—only that watching him struggle hurts more than she expected.
Saku is in love with her. Has been for over a year. And every day of hiding it, of pretending he doesn't want more than friendship, is getting harder. So he creates distance, thinking he's protecting what they have.
Neither realizes that the distance itself is what's destroying them.

Will was all out of excuses to keep avoiding Mike. He didn’t think he’d be strong enough to keep avoiding Mike either way - not with Mike calling him everyday- but this feels entirely too soon, the memories still fresh. Will feels that if he even thinks about Mike he could feel the phantom of Mike’s fingers digging into his hips, his lips pressing into Wills’ pulse, the thickness of his hair between Wills’ fingers.
The Wheeler’s front door opens on its own, and Will jumps from where he’s standing, letting out a small yelp in surprise.

Then he looks up and is met with smug faces, and Mike flushes when he realizes his own hypocrisy.
“I don’t talk like that,” Max recalls, voice high-pitched and overly girly and – Mike definitely doesn’t talk like that.
According to everyone in his life, Mike has a voice reserved just for Will. He tries to figure out what that says about him.
