The surprise was how much Aventurine wanted him to. How he’d slipped and lost his footing the moment he’d felt like someone would catch him. Aventurine couldn’t afford that comfort, and Ratio couldn’t afford the trouble Aventurine would bring him, inevitably, the distractions and the nonsense and all the reckless gambles.
Aventurine had cheated fate enough. And Ratio had other battles, more worth his while.

It was so unfortunate. Wriothesley had abandoned his usual clothes, a palette of reds and shades of grey, for a fitted suit and a fur-lined cape that he’d unpinned to hook casually over one shoulder. The boxing tape that normally wrapped around his neck and forearms to cover his scars had been traded out for a high-collared jacket and an embroidered black shirt, left insouciantly open at the throat. His knee-length boots, smartly heeled, added an unnecessary and obnoxious couple of centimeters to his height; he radiated the relaxed confidence of a predator in his own territory.

For the first time, he was close enough to what he wanted to hear. Varka might finally shape his movements, his choices, and Flins wanted it. He wanted to surrender his choices to Varka’s hands. He wanted it badly.
Varka was a very accommodating person. Always watching, always adjusting, so no one had to feel uncomfortable. Whether for the Knights or for his friends, he never changed.
Flins believed it was a beautiful thing. Humans were fragile and needed that coddling. But he was not human. He needed Varka to stop asking him what he wanted and to start giving him orders.
