“Why are you calling me?” Steven asks and then rushes to elaborate. “I mean not that I mind, I’m just curious why you don’t want Shane to know?”
Ryan and Shane have been together for a while. Steven knows that if he were in Ryan’s shoes, his significant other would probably be the first person he’d call. Especially when that significant other happens to be your best friend as well.
“I know he’s going to freak out,” Ryan says. “And I don’t want him to drive when he’s freaking out. So I was wondering if you could bring him over? Maybe have him call me from the car?”
“Yeah, of course,” Steven agrees immediately.
“Thanks,” Ryan says. Then he adds a little more quietly, “I’d really like him to be here.”

Ryan gets attacked and ends up in the hospital. Instead of calling Shane however, he texts Steven.

Summary
The point is that the jokes aren’t meant to be self-deprecating as much as they are just Shane being himself – quick to throw in lines that will make people laugh.
Something about this time hits different. Ryan doesn’t want to join in on the joke because as he stands at the foot of their bed and looks at his boyfriend laying in front of him, hair a wild mess and dressed in sweatpants and a tee because they’ve spent the day being lazy in their apartment, he can’t look away. The afternoon sun gives his skin a warm tone and makes his hair shine.
He’s beautiful and Ryan wants him to know the truth.

Summary
Shane wakes up to the eerie feeling that he's being watched. He opens his eyes and looks at the foot of their bed, and in the dim light coming through the blinds, he sees a figure standing there.
"Whatcha doing, munchkin?" He asks. His voice is heavy with sleep and he tries to keep it low so that he won’t wake up Ryan.
"I got scared," a timid voice replies.

Ryan finds out Shane is Not Traditionally of This World, and that’s— that’s fine, really, when it’s all said and done. Adult life is already so goddamn weird; Ryan feels like he’s prepared to let most anything roll off his back, so. Demons. Sure. As long as Shane’s not going to drag him to hell or eat his soul or whatever it is demons do, Ryan’s fine to keep working with him and having popcorn-and-movie nights with him and tumbling into bed with him.
He’ll fuck a demon. Whatever.
Except Shane says he’s not a demon.
