What was Shulk to him?
Older, certainly. Wise. Kind. Reserved in a way that Rex wasn't, but eager to talk about machines and engineering in a way that usually annoyed most people when Nikol brought it up. In some ways, they looked alike, but Nikol's face is a bit different, his coloration different too. Sometimes he would catch Shulk looking at him with an expression Nikol could never quite place, caught somewhere between pain and affection.

Summary
The first time Shulk seeks him, his heart stops.
He looks so much like Fiora it’s jarring. His hair color, the shape of his eyes, the cut of his jaw; Shulk’s mouth runs dry and his stump aches and his chest feels like it’s about to burst, but there’s also Alvis—some form of Alvis, at least—and Matthew and two giant Ferronises right in front of him that need to be taken care of first. There’s so much happening. Shulk’s head hurts. The Ferronises charge up and Shulk watches as he runs in front of Glimmer and he feels like he’s going to die.

She cannot help but feel like there is so much she did not know before that she suddenly knows when Dunban’s lip quivers, when he wraps his arm around his sister and leans his head overtop hers, when Reyn and Shulk share a nod and a gaze and a laugh, that there is a part of their common Homs lives that she will never understand, a deep sense of longing and belonging and loss and life that she will never be a part of.

And then he met Elena, in a dingy room in a Madagascar motel, and she had barely spared him a glance. For which he was very thankful, actually, because he’d seen such a furious fire in her eyes when they briefly met his that he worried he was about to be punched in the jaw.
It would have been an extremely valid punch in the jaw. His sins were really piling up.
