Nick Wilde moves in with Judy Hopps and immediately discovers a problem: they are doing everything married couples do, except for the part where they’ve never been on a date.
Somewhere between shared evenings on the couch, accidental “I love yous,” and learning how to ask for what they need without falling apart, Nick starts testing how much happiness he’s allowed to want—and how much steadiness Judy is already offering him without realizing it.

Nick restraints a snort with difficulty. That dimwitted cat actually stole his joke.
He expects Judy to titter politely, or offer an obligatory smile.
What he doesn’t expect is the full-bodied laugh that erupts from Judy’s chest, as if Pawbert had said the funniest thing in the world.
A hot, corrosive feeling suddenly boils up inside him. As if someone had poured acid inside his heart, then watched it slosh around with the rise and fall of his chest.

Judy loves police work, but she's not convinced that Nick, her partner (and, coincidentally, her boyfriend) shares that love to the same degree. She decides the only way he'll bother to seek out a career that fulfills him is if they break up, allowing him to focus on that pursuit.
