Summary
Joel had always thought it was being soul-bound that made him feel like that about Etho. It had made sense, of course, they were soulmates, bound by the very blood in their bodies, the very air they breathed. Of course it was intense, it made sense that he had wanted to chase Etho and tackle him, pin him down and prove that Etho was his. But that was just Double Life, that didn’t mean anything here, right? Joel expected to feel mostly normal about Etho here.
Clearly, he was wrong

Summary
“Do you ever wonder what it’s like?” Joel asked one night, his eyes fixed on Etho—as they had been for at least an hour.
Etho turned from across the Relation-Ship, meeting Joel's eyes to find an unusual intensity there, “Wonder about what?”
Joel shrugged and tried to seem casual as he said, "I mean, we know we share strong sensations. I, for one, am curious if that includes more than just pain and discomfort.”
Etho narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms, “What are you implying, Joel?"
“We’re soulmates, aren’t we, Etho? I wanna know what it feels like when we act like it.”

joel still has some questions and curiosities about the soulmate bonds, although his interest isn't particularly scientific (etho's still is a little bit, but he's got other motivations too)

Joel glared at Etho, trying to grab his covers back, but Etho was faster, pulling the edge out of Joel’s reach. “Ugh, fine, I’ll get up and we can do your stupid science experiments.”
Etho grinned at his victory, stepping back to give Joel room. “I’m going to go set up, come out as soon as you’re ready.”
“Set up—? Etho, what’ve you got planned?”
Etho just shrugged, “You’ll have to wait and see.”

basically kremy and gideon met when they were younger, before gideon transitioned. now they meet again and kremy is like "wow time did great things to this man'"
