Ilya knew he had fucked up the moment he'd said it. But he hadn't been able to help it.
He had known earlier that day when he had double checked his refrigerator to make sure the Canada Dry ginger ale he had bought the day before hadn't sprouted wings and flown away. And he had known when he had researched easy recipes of things he could make that fit Hollander's strict performance diet earlier that week that they were playing a dangerous game.
The two of them were Rozanov and Hollander, and that was all they could ever be. Ilya knew that. They were Hollander and Rozanov to the public, to the media, to their teammates, to their coaches, and they were supposed to be that to each other as well.
But Ilya had called him Shane. And then Shane had left.

“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”

Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. He can barely think, his brain switched off from exhaustion and terror, reduced to sheer instincts, following orders and a horrible routine, ingrained into his very body by now. He is carrying Lewis, a grown man thrown over his back like a sack of potatoes. He has no idea how far he has been walking, focused solely on the next step and on hopefully avoiding shells falling all over them. There is an ambulance in sight, waiting for them, hands reaching to help him take Lewis off him without injuring him farther, and settle him promptly into the back of the car. He raises his head to look at the driver and freezes in shock, certain that he finally has snapped, that his mind could not take it anymore and went straight into hallucination.
The driver is a woman, not an uncommon sight those days, but this particular woman has no business being here, in the middle of most literal hell.

“I wasn’t aware you knew Senator Levu,” Windu spoke cautiously, leaning forward in his seat as well.
Anakin shakes his head, but his body feels slow as if he’s moving through that awful jello that the GAR thinks is dessert. “I had a dream about her last night,” he says numbly.
The sense of dread hollows out his chest cavity and doesn’t seem intent on leaving. Every inch of Anakin’s being is screaming to run. His skin itches like he’s about to be thrown into jail as if he killed this senator.
“A dream you had?” Master Yoda speaks for the first time since Anakin entered, ears twitching in concern. “Like your mother, this dream?”
Anakin shakes his head again, “No. No, I… at least I didn’t think so. She was scared; she was running away from something, but I didn’t see what it was.”
“What were you doing in this dream?”
I think I was the one chasing her. “Just watching.”
