    Summary

Looking at the pages in her hand, it's clear why she was, and is, so drawn to it — turning her identity and past into a narrative is intoxicating. Narratives made things make sense.

She wants control of the narrative. She wants closure.

So she writes. She writes about her childhood in House Bartels. She writes about her mother, past and present. She writes about her father based on what little she knows. She speculates about her mother meeting Von Bartels. She further speculates about Von Bartels's childhood. She writes about topics that others shy away from, but which to her are the only things worth talking about. She writes dangerously. She picks up speed as she goes. She writes and she writes and she writes.

In which Mercedes writes an amateur history of the Martritz/Bartels lines, tries drinking for the first time, gets tangled in a Jane Austen-style romance, and, maybe, just maybe, finally takes control over her life.

    Summary

Pain is something that binds all people, no matter their race, their creed, poor or wealthy. But the curse that binds Throne and Castti is something that runs far deeper, and far more deadly than a little pain.

    Summary

Against his better judgement Ferdinand turned to look.

He was supposed to be there too. She was to ascend the throne, flanked on either side by Aegir and Vestra. Sword and shield. Dark and light. Two gems adorning the crown. Keeping it balanced and unburdened.

That was his place that stood empty. His place that was a number of steps away and completely unreachable.

It had been decided while he was playing schoolboy, the crown apparently need not be symmetrical.

Ferdinand von Aegir was to be her Prime Minister. He was raised for it, trained for it, destined for it. Then the Empire fell into war, his father fell into treason and his life fell into ruin.

Now a disgraced noble, with no name, no family, no wealth and no home, he must crawl his way back up, and prove himself not only to the Emperor and a world that would rather forget him, but to himself as well.

But loyalty is no longer simple, honor no longer abundant, and friendship is easier lost than earned.

A story of penance, pride, the weight of legacy and responsibility. It’s of friendships burned, friendships created and friendships unnoticed.

Above all it is a story of what remains when a title is gone.
