Keith looks between the children and the hat, too confused to glare, sweaty and horrid from pulling weeds beneath the scorching sun. “What?”
“That’s wrong,” Nadia complains, and yanks her brother down to her level to whisper the correction in his ear.
“Ooh,” Silvio amends. “Tía Veronica said you have a pale ass. My Abuela said you’re gonna die.”
OR
When Lance is fatally wounded during their final battle, the blue lion enters a deep hibernation with Lance inside. Unsure when or if he’ll wake, Keith is forced to wait and watch over him in the company of the people he fears most: Lance’s family.

So nothing is okay, and everything’s okay. There’s one missing piece to the equation, and Keith’s gotten very good at ignoring it. He goes to work and goes to the doctor’s and goes to Pidge’s and the Holt’s and Shiro and Adam’s and keeps himself moving and busy. He’s got a lot on his plate; he’s trying to figure out how he’s going to raise a baby, he doesn’t have much time for anything else.
But that’s only during the day. At night, things are quiet. He lays in his windowless room on his creaky bed, tossing and turning because he can’t fucking get comfortable, and he blinks gritty eyes at the dark room and just wants. He wants warm arms, and he wants someone to get him a glass of water, and he wants someone to tell him it’s gonna be okay, and someone to hold him up cause he’s getting exhausted doing it all himself. And he doesn’t want just anyone, he wants Lance. He misses Lance.
Which is the silliest thing he’s ever heard. How can you miss something that was never yours?
(Keith, a motorcycle mechanic, and Lance, a movie star, spend one night at a bar together. They get a lot more than they bargained for.)

If Keith turns his head right before the beat drops, maybe they could kiss and fireworks would explode in the background. If Keith turns his head, Lance would get the rom-com ending he’s always wanted in a movie about his life. Instead, Keith lets the moment pass by, content to enjoy the descending sun with his best friend on a sand dune in California, buzzed with finals study guides forgotten in Arizona.
He sits and watches.
Later on, he’d have to listen to Lance gripe about not pulling your stupid face off the sky and kissing the dumbfounded look offit, but he really couldn’t know the future.
