“Did you injure your shoulder recently, Mr. Reese?” John pauses- reminds himself that Finch is just curious and not looking to catalog any and all weaknesses he may have.
“Not recently,” he concedes, the book he’d had to strain to grab clutched in one hand like a consolation prize.
Finch hums without moving to look at him; John wonders how he’d noticed his difficulty in the first place, considering his eyes haven’t seemed to leave his screens in several minutes.

The thing about a skilled torturer is that they know when to quit; they know when they’re not getting through to someone, when they’re never going to get through to someone, and John- well, John may have underestimated these particular mercenaries.
They’re hurting him because they realized that was the best way to hurt John, to get him to fold. They’re hurting him because they realized that John got snarkier the closer they got to Harold, as if he was trying to redirect their attention, because, of course, he was.
They’re hurting Finch because of John.

John sighs- at the sound of Root using something so close to his name, at the feeling of the wind whistling through their respective bullet holes, at the setting sun not doing a damn thing to chase away any of the chill he feels.
“Not whether or not we were gonna die, Root,” they both knew the answer to that long before it happened, “This- all of this.” He gestures to the world they’re now removed from with one spectral hand that he can barely manage to keep visible.

Tim didn’t come back quite right, his elbows turned to ball-joints, his fingers no longer quite as clever or quite as graceful due to their rigidity, the waxy plastic of his body melting and reforming when he’s not paying enough attention to it. It’s like the Stranger tried to consume him and then spit him right back out, Tim’s taste too bitter, too sure of himself, just for the fire and the destruction to claim him moments later.
