    Summary

    An arrow was released.

It would have pierced him through the throat had the elf not slighted the bow down at the last second.

“Forgive me,” the elf murmured, “I thought you were an orc, for your breathing was so ragged.”

“No,” said Aragorn, with his hands raised in some passive form of surrender, “I am but an exhausted man.”

“Aye, I can see that much now.”

    Summary

“Ach, elf, you’re making it seem like he’s wearing some fancy unmentionables. As long as Frodo hasn’t been parading around in an indestructible negligee there is no shame in the truth. Out with it, you pointy-eared devil.”

“Bilbo said it belonged to an elven prince long ago,” Legolas sighed. He was certain he was flushed bright red as Gimli’s beard– he felt as if he were being set on fire from the inside.

“Yes, he did say that.” Frodo’s brows pressed together, now with confusion. “Am I supposed to know the names of all elven princes from ages past?”

“No,” Legolas said slowly. “But, I, ah, suppose on your journey you have met… one.”

(In which the Fellowship figures out, amongst other things, the origin of Frodo's mithril shirt.)

    Summary

"It's, ah… what, now?" Boromir asked.

"Rock, paper, scissors. I know what you're thinking, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate--"

    "No, but… what, now?"

Oh. This, he hadn't thought of.

"Do they not have rock, paper, scissors in Gondor?" Frodo asked. Pippin and Merry also looked quizzically toward Boromir, who shifted his shield.

"I suppose not, since I've never heard of that in my life."

    "You explain it then, Pip."

    Summary

"Your beard obstructs too much of your mouth" is not polite to tell a dwarf, nor does Legolas wish to explain why he needs to see Gimli's mouth to know what he says.

Gimli, meanwhile, spends the first part of their journey together ignoring the elf out of indignation.

This all changes with an explanation and a belated answer to what Gimli had attempted to ask before they set out. From there on, they are friends. Or, in the words of Aragorn:

"I would have an easier time separating Gimli from his axe than I would separating him from you. And you know that he does not relinquish his axe so easily."

    Summary

Fool of a Took seemed to be the enduring muttered mantra of the Fellowship, at least where Gandalf was concerned. It was entirely possible that the others thought it in their hearts– certainly not his fellow hobbits, but perhaps the Men that were sworn to follow Frodo into fire and flames, the grumbling dwarf, and the strange elf who spoke rarely and blinked even less. Pippin tried not to let it prick his heart: he knew this quest was something far beyond his understanding of the world, knew that truly realizing it would warp his brain in ways that could not be undone, knew that, after all, he was just a simple hobbit who had quite literally stumbled into saving the world. He could quell the pinpricks with those thoughts.

Before Moria, of course. Before knocking the helmet down the well. Before the balrog.

(In which Legolas has a bad time, Pippin has even worse time, and the fellowship finally gets around to talking about the balrog incident, though not before Legolas and Pippin run into trouble in the woods.)
