Summary
Jack Abbot was very clearly not the kind of guy that Samira Mohan was into.
Which was fine. There was a whole laundry list of reasons that women didn’t flock to Jack Abbot. He was too short: women expected alphas to be taller. He was approaching fifty. He had a job he was completely dedicated to that did not lend itself to a normal sleeping cycle— or a normal life, for that matter. He had one factory-model leg and one titanium and carbon fiber aftermarket fix for a right-side BKA he’d undergone in Germany. He was chock-full of C-PTSD and anxiety and depression and maladaptive coping mechanisms that ten years of therapy had finally put a slight dent in. He had a wife named Maggie who’d been dead for almost seven years. And he hadn’t had sex in those seven years, apart from the handful of emergency DRIs he’d been able to help with here at the Pitt.
----------
Abbot is the Pitt's emergency contact for designation-related incidents.
Mohan doesn't quite know how she feels about that.
Until, one day, she finds that she needs him. -

Summary
Samira exhales through her nose. It might have been a laugh, but he doesn’t allow himself to hope. “Missed me that bad?”
Despite himself, he laughs. It breaks through the lump in his throat, coming out gruff and shaking. “That bad,” he confirms, without a hint of embarrassment.
God, he’s going to fall off this roof. And it wouldn’t even be on purpose.
-
Samira Mohan sells her soul to the army for medical school. Nobody understands that so intimately as Jack Abbot. Out in no man’s land, they manage to form something that neither can really understand. After three years, it only takes one mass casualty incident to pull them back together.

Summary
He can barely think, his brain switched off from exhaustion and terror, reduced to sheer instincts, following orders and a horrible routine, ingrained into his very body by now. He is carrying Lewis, a grown man thrown over his back like a sack of potatoes. He has no idea how far he has been walking, focused solely on the next step and on hopefully avoiding shells falling all over them. There is an ambulance in sight, waiting for them, hands reaching to help him take Lewis off him without injuring him farther, and settle him promptly into the back of the car. He raises his head to look at the driver and freezes in shock, certain that he finally has snapped, that his mind could not take it anymore and went straight into hallucination.
The driver is a woman, not an uncommon sight those days, but this particular woman has no business being here, in the middle of most literal hell.
“Mary?” he rasps, disbelieving.- Language:
