“Shane?” Ilya asks again. “What happened?” His gloveless hand twitches and he lifts it a fraction of an inch towards Shane.
Shane tosses his own gloves to the ice and reaches forward, lacing their fingers together. “You took a bad hit,” he says, gritting his teeth against the fear clawing at his guts. “Flipped headfirst into the ice. Are you okay?”
Ilya groans in answer and squeezes his hand, though Shane can't tell if he meant to do that or not.
Suddenly, there are people all around them. Shane shifts protectively close before he realizes it’s the medical team.
“Hollander, get back to your bench,” someone says, but there’s no way Shane’s going. Even if he wanted to, Ilya’s gripping his hand like a lifeline, eyes finally locked on Shane’s face. Shane isn’t leaving him.

Bucky isn't taller than him by a lot, maybe an inch, maybe two, but enough to where Sam’s eyes have to travel up, where he finds his head tipping back just to meet a steel-blue gaze.
It makes something in Sam's stomach twist, makes his chest flutter like a whirlwind kicked up behind his ribs and touches down in his sternum. It’s ridiculous how Bucky looking down at him, how he tilts his head low just to catch on Sam’s words and meets his eyes has Sam reeling. Riley wasn't much taller than Sam either, had Sam’s guts doing cartwheels when he’d swoop down to catch a kiss before training, but when Bucky does it, when he pitches his head down by even the slightest degree, it's something else entirely.
Or: Sam isn't all that bothered by the inch Bucky has on him, it would just be cool if he didn't want to kiss him stupid because of it.
