Her martinis have hit her. Hard. She’s woefully lightweight; it takes nothing for her to feel tipsy. The cigarette smoke on her tongue tastes acrid, it adds to her mild discomfort. She breathes in another drag, flicks the ash off to the side. Samira feels a little dizzy, but invincible.

Robby glanced up at Samira, then, as if he could read her mind, and she swallowed hard. Jack placed his palm against her thigh, warm and stable, and for once she didn’t try to redirect her thoughts. She sat there, let the low rumble of Robby’s voice wash over her, felt the gentle pressure of Jack’s hand on her leg. There was nothing wrong with her, except for maybe the same things that were wrong with both of them.

I would give away anything to see this adapted to the screen. it was described so vividly and in character. yes yes yes, Ilya, unabashedly stupefied with jealousy, trying so hard to express what he is feeling without showing his buried feelings. even though I like the original idea of Ilya stopping sleeping with other people all on its own, this scenario just awakes something in me; cold unfazed people being jealous and not afraid to admit it

I have never been happier to read a hate speech in my life. Most of the time when I don't like something I just don't give a shit about it and move on with my life — but the amount of praise this book got just didn't sit right with me. And I finally understood why.
one of my favorite passages from there:
"What this means is: typically the job of original fiction is to create characters readers care about – even if what we care about is their downfall. The job of good fanfiction is to be faithful to characters readers already know and care about – it needs to be ‘in character’ or ‘IC’. However, the job of fanfiction is not to create investment in characters. You’re reading fanfiction, after all – you bring your investment with you.
So when I say ‘this feels like fanfiction [derogatory]’ about a novel, typically what I mean is: this author does not act like it’s their job to create characters I care about."

The locks on Ilya’s car clicked, and he waited for Shane to look up at him. “Get in,” he ground out between clenched teeth.
Shane was hardwired to follow Ilya’s every command. It was coded into his genetics, he thought, because the deep pull in the pit of his stomach to follow the accented order couldn’t be normal. He hated that part of him that was so willing, so ready to submit. Maybe it could be explained away by some sort of psychological terminology he was unfamiliar with, a desire to relinquish control, to relax and let someone else take the wheel for once in his rigid life.
And maybe it was just Ilya.
In Episode 4, Shane leaves the nightclub with Rose. In the book, he leaves alone.
But what if he had left with Ilya instead?

Summary
Ilya’s hand wraps around his bare wrist and squeezes. Shane barely stops himself from collapsing to his knees.
The pressure lights up every receptor of his touch-starved nervous system, wrenching a small, pained noise from the back of his throat. Every muted sensation comes flooding back so intensely that it almost hurts. He needs Ilya to hold him down until there’s nothing inside him but quiet. He wants to sink into him and disappear.
It takes Shane an entire beat to remember where they are. Fighting against the fog in his mind, he manages to drag his gaze up to meet Ilya’s.
There’s a slow-dawning horror and understanding on Ilya’s face.

So far the most compelling and informative study done on Atlanta Child Murder cases, save for the fact that there are theories and speculation that the majority of the murders were done by someone else/multiple. I'll continue to look for more information regarding those cases as it has interested me greatly.

Some little scene sketches from early in Marty and Rust's partnership, and parts of the 1995 investigation. Not in chronological order.
In Louisiana Rust creates his own structure. His work is necessary and not overtly cruel to the larger human organism of which he is a part. He is entitled to the things that allow him to do the work: mattress, cigarettes, books, shoes.
He is not entitled to Marty but has ended up with him anyway. This will backfire.

Summary
One of the only damn reasons Marty tangled with men at all was their understanding of a few tacit rules, the first being that it was just getting off, just physical release and nothing more. The second being that it was never to be spoken of. Hell, it was rarely even asked for directly, the less said the better. Primal signals worked best: sitting a little too close in the sauna at the rec center, having a few too many whiskeys at the bar together. Men were uncomplicated and predictable, and Marty should’ve just stuck to blowjobs on dusty Parish roads instead of chasing a piece of tail like Lisa.
Figures Rust’d be like a woman, wanting to talk about what happened.

i am rewatching season 1 and again am reminded of how grabbing and fascinating their dynamic was. i truly geniunely worship fics that include d/s dynamic without all the bureacracy of it; don't get me wrong, i love well crafted bdsm structure, especially when the characters are shown to be into it from their interactions but when it's so stuffled and buried like with these two... yeah, that's perfect characterisation. love it
