Summary
Rumi takes notes in careful Greek, the letters flowing from her pen with the ease of muscle memory millennia deep. She's been auditing Dr. Park's "Greek Mythology and Society" course for three weeks now. Before that, it was a semester of Medieval Literature at a college in Maine. Before that, Introduction to Archaeology in Ohio. Before that, a blur of lecture halls and libraries and temporary apartments where she never unpacked all her boxes because what was the point?
She'd been doing this longer than Vermont had been a state—longer than the language these students speak had settled into its current form. She'd watched the printing press change everything, watched the Industrial Revolution remake the landscape, watched the Internet arrive and make the world simultaneously larger and smaller.
She's good at watching. It's staying that she's never mastered.
OR
Rumi can see every possible future. She still didn't see Mira coming.

"We need to talk," Zoey announced, sweeping into the apartment without waiting for an invitation.
"Hello to you too. Yes, you can come in. No, I'm not busy at all."
Zoey ignored her, setting a velvet bag on the kitchen counter with the reverence usually reserved for holy relics. "The universe has spoken."
"Oh good. What did it say this time? 'Stop letting your friend enable your chaotic gremlin behavior?'"
"Close." Zoey pulled a small vial from the bag. The liquid inside was pink and seemed to shimmer in the light, though that might have just been glitter. Knowing Zoey, it was definitely glitter. "It said it's time to stop watching you pine over Mira like a Victorian maiden dying of consumption."
Rumi dropped the shirt she was folding. "Excuse me?"
"Valentine's Day is in just over a week." Zoey held up the vial like she was presenting evidence in court. "Maximum magical potency. The new moon falls on the fifteenth this year—perfect alignment. The stars are literally aligning for you, Rumi. I'm not going to let you waste this opportunity."
"Zoey—"
"I've brewed a love potion."

"Even knowing that Mira doesn't believe in soulmates—
Even knowing she's chosen to walk away from whoever bears her mark—
Rumi can't shake the feeling that Mira is making a mistake.
Not about soulmates. About her.
Mira deserves someone whole. Someone who won't fail her the way Rumi failed Jinu.
And the realization that settles deepest of all… I still want her."OR
Rumi has always loved carefully. Mira makes her want recklessly—and maybe, finally, for herself.

Summary
Rumi opens her character notes. Scrolls slowly:
Observant—sees discomfort before it's spoken
Protective in quiet ways
Terrible at asking for help
Downplays pain, says "fine" when she isn't
She didn't invent this character.
She's been writing Mira.
"Oh," she whispers.OR
Mira's an ex-FBI profiler consulting with Rumi, a crime writer, for her book. Neither of them is good at recognizing when they're falling in love—or admitting when they need help.
(Chronic pain. Writer's block. Midnight interventions. Learning to let someone catch you when you fall.)

Summary
It was the first week of freshman year, and I saw you carrying boxes down the hallway, three doors from mine. I was naturally excited about school, about meeting new people, about all the possibilities ahead. I'd already introduced myself to half the floor. But you—you kept your door mostly closed, your headphones on, your eyes down.
I remember standing in the common room with Zoey, my roommate who'd already become a fast friend, when you emerged to fill your water bottle. I smiled and waved. You gave the smallest nod and disappeared back into your room. Zoey laughed at my expression.
"Not everyone's like us, Rumi,” she said. “Some people need time.”OR
As Rumi and Mira grow from strangers to something inseparable, Rumi holds tightly to the memories that built them. But remembering, it turns out, may be both the easiest—and hardest—kind of love.
