Despite his curiosity, he doesn’t bother to mask the resignation in his voice at the prospect of being used and forgotten again, either. But even so, he can’t help the way his heart hammers against his ribs when he can hear Kiryu sigh again on the other end.
“I don’t need anything. Not really. I think I just wanted to tell you something. I wanted you to be the first to know this time.”
Huh. That catches him off guard. Enough that he has to sit down. Even the background noise of Kamurocho outside his office window seems to fall silent. “Alright. What is it?”
“Well, the thing is…”
Kiryu seems to hesitate. He gives a weak cough, and clears his throat. Then, he says:
“I want to live.”
