Comforting?” He searches Bruce’s unreadable face desperately for some OK signal, a sign that he understands or at least isn’t, like, upset with him.

An explosion on the TV jerks his eyes open and he meets Rooster’s gaze, their faces awash in the fiery glow, and suddenly Maverick feels so damn sad for the kid on top of him that his throat locks up. Rooster’s brow is furrowed like he’s hurting somewhere and he’s searching Maverick’s face again, grip tightening on Maverick’s hips until it punches a noise out from the depths of his chest, and Maverick knows what he’s known since he walked out of that hospital room and saw the tiny kid curled up in the too-big waiting chair: Bradley was fucked the moment his dad died.

Back in Idaho I used to burn ants with the light concentrated through a magnifying glass. I got taught my alphabet and my numbers sat with my elbows on the sticky lino tablecloth in the dining room. I used to sit on the porch and watch storms blow in; bruised purple clouds clumping up on the horizon, like when you pull the plug on a soapy sink, and some clings to the enamel.
I feel like I’m circling the drain. When I ask Scott, he says he got washed down years ago.
