“We're not a couple,” Buck eventually spat out.
It was the truth, but he ignored the way the words felt like poison in his mouth.
“This morning at breakfast I watched you feed him a strawberry,” Chimney said.
Buck glared at him from behind the couch. “It was a perfectly platonic strawberry feeding.”
“If it's so platonic, feed me a strawberry right now,” Ravi demanded.
“I'm not going to do that,” Buck responded.
“And why not, Buckley?”
Buck threw his hands up. “Because you're allergic to strawberries, dumbass!”
or: Buck feeds Eddie a strawberry and then acts totally normal about it.

"So," Buck says, sliding onto the seat next to Eddie while the auction winds down around them. "Mystery bidder. That's exciting."
Eddie takes a very deliberate sip of water. "Yep."
"You know who it was?"
"Nope."
"You don't even seem curious," Buck tries.
"Not really."
"Someone spent over two grand on you, Eddie. On a date with you. Like a date-date. With food and conversation. And you're just— what, chill about it?"
Eddie shrugs. The picture of nonchalance. "It's for charity."
"It's for— okay." Buck gapes. He’s got nothing. He’s standing at the door and Eddie has deadbolted it from the inside. "Cool. Great."
It is not cool. It is not great. Buck is aware that his definition of cool and great has always been somewhat flexible, but this doesn't qualify under any interpretation.

Summary
Buck feels his heart drop in his chest in time with Eddie’s fall to the bottom of the stairs. He’s too far away to hear anything, but blood roars in his ears in a crush of fear and fury, and he takes off in Eddie’s direction before he knows what he’s doing. It’s kind of always been that way, regardless of the stakes. Whether it was turning in Eddie’s orbit and clocking his pain even when nobody else did, or pulling him to safety as he bled out on the street, Buck has always been hardwired to move toward Eddie.

“So you want me to meet some stranger on an app?” Eddie’s not on board with the idea, but all things considered, it would be easy enough to pretend like he didn’t get any matches or that all of his conversations fizzled out.
“No, we are going to meet strangers IRL,” Buck says.
Great. An inescapable hell of performed heterosexuality, spurred on by the love of his life. Eddie hasn’t been keeping track of his own trials and tribulations, but he knows that this conversation alone should add at least five to the count.
