“I don’t even know who you are.” Grian protests, gripping his knife tightly. He won’t let his guard down, not again. He’s already been discovered doing an unspeakable atrocity, what else can he let this man know?
“I know you eat.” Joel stands up, pushing himself off his knees and begins stepping towards Grian. “You crave something beyond normalcy. You walk around acting like you’re just like everyone else but deep down you know there’s something wrong with you.”
“There’s nothing wrong with me.” Grian grits out.

Summary
“Hello?” Joel clears his throat, sounding raspy.
“Joel.” His speech is slurred, a bit mumbly and the vowels rumble through his throat, but it’s him. It’s his voice. Joel could recognize it anywhere, even if he pretended he forgot. He hears it every night when he closes his eyes, the rumble in his voice when he yells at Joel, the groan when Joel manages to annoy him successfully. He hasn’t realized how much he missed it until he hears it right in his ears.
Grian. His Grian. The same guy who manages to plague his every thought, every reflection he looks into he sees how Grian changed him fundamentally. They say you find yourself unrecognizable after a relationship because of how different you are from your true self, but Joel thinks it’s the opposite with him.
He fears he is only himself around his ex.

The sun shines perfectly in a way that makes her glow in the sunlight and for a moment all he can think about is how he would give up all the riches in his ender chest just to see her smile at him like this forever.
He thinks about how he would sacrifice every fiber of his being, all the blood in his veins and the lives he has left to keep her laughter bottled up in a jar and listen to it in the silences when she isn’t there. How he would give up the entire kingdom, let it fall into ruins just for a touch of his lips on her shoulder. He would follow her to the ends of the earth and into the depths of hell if she asked him to.

Summary
He doesn’t think he’s known satisfaction until this moment, and even then it doesn’t feel like enough. Like he can’t get enough of Joel, even when they’re kissing like they’re fighting. Like they have something to prove to each other. They’re grabbing and pulling at the fabric that serves as too thick of a layer between them. Like kissing isn’t enough, like the physical intimacy of holding each other will never be enough for them. Nothing might ever satisfy him until they somehow combine into one person, one soul, until Grian opens Joel up and climbs into his skin and stays.

The thing is, Joel doesn’t need protection in a way Mumbo does. Joel is self-sufficient; he doesn’t need Grian in the same way Grian doesn’t need Joel. But there’s a part of him that will always want him. Carnally. Desperately.
Grian doesn’t need Joel, but he wants to need him, and that is the key difference.

He bites and snaps just to feel the exhilarating rush when someone takes the bait. McVries is very good to him in that regard—he never hesitates to bite back when Barkovitch snaps his jaws at him. Barkovitch needs that. He can’t have love so hatred is the next best thing. It’s close enough. It’s all he’ll get.
