Summary
Unbidden, Mike recalled the argument between himself and Max in the summer of ’85 which had led to him accusing everyone of treating El like a machine. That day in Hopper’s cabin now seemed miles away from the present, yet the level of fervor he felt at the memory was no less intense.
He wanted to rage at the world for what it had put El through – at the mountainous burdens it had placed on the shoulders of this teenage girl. After all of this, Mike resolved, he would spend the rest of his life fighting to give her the world, because she deserved nothing less.

Mike didn’t think his day could get any worse.

He then spent the afternoon on a fruitless hunt for a gift for said girlfriend – and quickly realized that $3.50 would get him absolutely nowhere. And now, just as he was beginning to wallow in self-pity while contemplating the series of unfortunate events that had tragically befallen him, who should turn up at Starcourt Mall with Max but El herself?

Gilbert concealed the smile that threatened his features behind his fist.
He had kissed Anne. His Anne with an E.
She had thrown her arms around him, gently touching his face with the soft pad of her finger, and kissed him with a restrained passion he himself did not possess. His girl was a whistling storm that quieted under the insistent nature of his kiss. He calmed her rocky seas and she dared disrupt his own oceans.
Life, Gilbert was beginning to suspect, was a boring affair in lieu of an Anne.
