Summary
Eddie has his own cowboy hat. Buck does not. [Enter discoball cowboy hat.]
-or-
“You look really good.” The words tumble out of him before he has the chance to stop them. Eddie blinks at him, the obvious shock of Buck’s words making his smile falter just a tiny bit.
Buck’s eyes widen, and he sucks in a sharp breath. Oh god, he hadn’t meant to say that. That’s what he’s been trying not to say this entire night. In a desperate attempt to save his own ass, Buck scrabbles to find an excuse. “It. Ahem, sorry, it looks really good. The hat. Like, cool, the whole vibe is cool. Wish I had one.”

Summary
Maddie’s eyebrows rise, and she looks past Buck to Eddie, the corners of her mouth curling upwards. “My kisses don’t work on Uncle Eddie,” she says, and if she thinks Buck misses the way she says it—Uncle Eddie—she’s sorely mistaken. He knows exactly what she’s doing.
And he realizes too late that that means he should probably be afraid.
Jee gasps, eyes going wide. “What?” She asks breathlessly. “Then how will his ouchies get better?”
Maddie hums thoughtfully—performatively—before her eyes slowly slide over to Buck. He starts to shake his head, unsure exactly what she’s about to do but deeply aware that he’s not going to like it. “I have heard,” she says, leaning into her like she has a secret, “That best friend kisses are just as good as mommy kisses.” She tosses her hair over her shoulder and looks at Chimney. “And almost as strong as daddy kisses, too.”

Summary
“Wanna dance?” Eddie asks, leaning only slightly away to look at Buck. He’s smirking now, eyes traveling all over Buck’s face, taking in his expression and the color blooming on his cheeks.
There’s a look in Eddie’s eyes now, one that Buck hadn’t quite seen before this trip. Or had he? Did it just not mean to him then what he realizes, or thinks, it means now? Regardless, it confirms a thought that has been niggling at the back of his mind all night.
Flirting. Eddie was flirting with him.
or, Buck visits Eddie in Texas a few months after he leaves LA. They road trip to Austin with Adriana to stay with Sophia, who has planned a night out on the town that none of them will soon forget - especially Buck and Eddie.

Summary
“Were you really worried?” asks Eddie. Buck’s brow furrows, confused. “About, you know—what you said. That your looks wouldn’t cut it. Because that’s…”
Buck’s head tilts on its axis, in a manner that would be almost harrowing if it weren’t his familiar, ludicrously handsome face. “That’s what?”
“Stupid,” Eddie blurts out. Shakes his head. Rectifies. “Not—you’re not stupid. Not at all. I just mean that… obviously, someone should want you for all of you.” Eddie thinks that should really go without saying. “But even without all the addendums. You’re, like, a total smokeshow, man.”
Good God. That’s fucking embarrassing. Even worse—or perhaps better, Eddie is so ruined—Buck beams.
"Total smokeshow?” Buck repeats, nothing short of delighted. On topic, Eddie really could go for a smoke bomb right about now. Just—pull the pin and flee.

Summary
Dear Captain Nash,
I know this email is kind of out of the blue, but I didn’t know who else to reach out to. I’m not even sure how to start this email. One time Buck and I signed up for this pen pal program, but the kid in Maine I was writing with gave up after two rounds of letters. It was during my ancient Egypt phase and I think I scared him off with my questions about mummies. Buck told me I was too cool for him anyway.
or
When Chris starts going to church in Texas he reaches out to the only person he can think of who might have some answers, meanwhile Eddie uses his email to try and talk to God, and Buck... well Buck online shops mostly.
A season 8 rewrite told only through email.

Summary
The door beside him swings up, the hinges squealing, and the sounds of the crowd and pumping music slip through. Maddie and Chimney stumble through the doorway, holding onto each other and laughing. Maddie tucks a strand of hair behind her ears, her eyes widening when she spots Eddie standing nearby.
“There he is!” she says. “Looking forward to our future date?”
Eddie laughs, throwing his head back. “Definitely.”“Why did you get my wife to cheat for you?” Chimney asks, an eyebrow partially raised. “It wasn’t exactly in the spirit of the event.”
“I told you I wasn’t keen on the idea, and Maddie was the only other person there who I thought could help me. The charity is still getting the money, and I don’t have to go out on a date with anyone. Win-win.”

Summary
There are a few spam e-mails at the top, and he feels a familiar spike of annoyance at the sight - he never signed up to receive these stupid advertisement emails, why does he have to be the one to go through and unsubscribe to all of them? It’s stupid, that’s all he’s saying - as well as a few texts from the 118-group chat, somebody trying to get a day off, but at the bottom, there’s a text that came in 23 minutes ago that makes his stomach fall to his ass and static buzz in his ears.
Christopher: Missed Call
Christopher: Dad, I thjnk somethngs wrng
Christopher: Dad pleas
He knows his son is hardly one to take the time to spell everything out when he could use simple acronyms, but this isn’t that. These are misspellings, and the lack of emojis - from the kid who once spoke to him solely in the little suckers while he was on shift one day - has him immediately pulling up his son’s contact information and hitting dial, chewing on his inner cheek as he waits for the call to connect.
Or: As Eddie is debating his move to Texas, a few texts from his son in the middle of the day set him on a course to getting everything he's been wanting.

Summary
"So," Buck says, sliding onto the seat next to Eddie while the auction winds down around them. "Mystery bidder. That's exciting."
Eddie takes a very deliberate sip of water. "Yep."
"You know who it was?"
"Nope."
"You don't even seem curious," Buck tries.
"Not really."
"Someone spent over two grand on you, Eddie. On a date with you. Like a date-date. With food and conversation. And you're just— what, chill about it?"
Eddie shrugs. The picture of nonchalance. "It's for charity."
"It's for— okay." Buck gapes. He’s got nothing. He’s standing at the door and Eddie has deadbolted it from the inside. "Cool. Great."
It is not cool. It is not great. Buck is aware that his definition of cool and great has always been somewhat flexible, but this doesn't qualify under any interpretation.
Or,
Buck just wants to know who bid on Eddie. That's it. That's all he wants. He's being totally normal about it.Bookmarked by moonlightmins

Summary
Eddie groan is audible even through the locked door, “I fell asleep in the shower.”
Buck can’t help the laugh that crawls its way up his throat, but he recovers quickly. "I mean… I did tell you to go to bed."
"My hair smelled like sewage. Still does actually, I hadn't… gotten around to washing it." Eddie counters quickly.
Buck has always prided himself on his vast knowledge of Everything Eddie Diaz, which is why he knows he's not going to be able to convince his best friend to skip the shampoo and get out of the shower right now. Still, he doesn't expect himself to say what he says next. "Do you want me to help?"

Summary
“Stop it,” Buck huffs out, shuffling out of reach. “You’re being ridiculous.”
“I’m not doing anything,” Eddie insists, sliding backwards until his socked foot touches Buck’s leg again.
“You’re being a dick.”
Buck attempts to move away again, and Eddie follows him, refusing to stop touching him with his socks until suddenly Buck’s not there anymore and a loud thump echoes throughout the room.
“Did you just—”
“Shit,” Buck mutters, and Eddie can vaguely see the shape of Buck’s body in the dark as he heaves himself up off the floor. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

“You shouldn’t be here, either. He’s an asshole, he’s not even—”
“Why do you care?" Buck interrupts him, raising his tone, “It’s not like I’m gonna marry him!”
“I sure hope not!” Eddie replies loudly, offended, then, thinks to himself, you’re gonna marry me.

Summary
Thinking of strong arms embracing him from behind. Amber eyes and a soft strand of hair falling over a forehead. A scar on the bottom lip and a tattoo wrapped around a forearm—Buck blows on the eyelash. It flies away in the wind.
Finally, he tears his eyes away from it. His stare meets Eddie’s again, whose grin still hasn’t diminished.
Buck stutters out, “Sorry,” and takes a small step away from him. Eddie still doesn’t budge.
“No, it's—” Eddie’s fingers brush over where Buck’s once were on his face. “Uh, what does it mean?”
“Hmm?”
“The eyelash. It must mean something,” Eddie says. “Apparently, everything has a hidden meaning now. Tell me about it.” His tone is soft, and Buck melts like putty in his hands.
OR Buck becomes strangely and obsessively superstitious about all aspects of life to hide from the fact that he’s deeply in love with his straight best friend.

Summary
“This is the most thought that anyone, of all time, ever, has put into adjusting a driver’s seat, Eddie.”
“Buck—”
“I’m serious. That rearview mirror has lived through so many angles and lives in the past six minutes that it’s about to start recounting its first-hand experience on the Titanic.”
Just for that, Eddie reaches up between them and tweaks the mirror again. A ray of sunlight hits it and bounces across Buck’s eyeline. Buck’s face scrunches up as he rushes to shield his forehead with one hand. It does not remind Eddie whatsoever of a small, bashful dog hiding behind its soft paw, because that would be deranged. He twists the mirror back into position.
“The Titanic probably would have gotten us to Nashville better than this truck.”
Buck’s indignant squawk rings out in time with the turnover of the engine as Eddie hits the ignition.

Eddie narrows his eyes at her suspiciously as she continues to sit there in amicable silence, seemingly conducting some sort of psychological warfare on him.
“Why did you bid on me?” he blurts.
“We never get to hang out one-on-one,” Maddie answers with a shrug. “And you’re very important to a lot of people who are very important to me. So I figured it was about time we did.”
“You spent sixteen hundred dollars,” Eddie reminds her.
Maddie shrugs again. “I was feeling charitable.”

Summary
“I’m trying not to make it about me.”
The words seem to stop Eddie in his tracks—but only for a fleeting moment. Then, “Okay, then let me.”
Buck blinks, ignoring the feeling of a single tear fighting past the edge of his lashline. Instantly, he swipes it away. “What?”
“Let me make it about you. Talk to me. I want to know what’s going on with you. I’m not gonna be able to focus on this god awful dinner if I’m worried that you’re alone, and upset, and—”
“I miss you,” Buck confesses, abruptly, because anything else he wants to say right now is too raw, too real.
Eddie exhales into the microphone of his phone. “Yeah. Yeah, I—I know. I miss you, too.”
“No, I miss you. More than I’m supposed to, I think.”
“I’m your best friend, bud,” Eddie tells him. “I think you’re supposed to miss me. We’re eight hundred miles apart.”
Miserably, Buck shakes his head. “Not like this.”
Or: Buck finally unpacks and stumbles across a box Eddie left behind, full of sketchbooks that Buck didn’t know he owned. He’s confronted, suddenly, with the fact that his best friend has been drawing him for years.

Summary
“Eddie, I’m in love with you,” he says, heart thrumming in his chest, in his throat, in his mouth. He feels hot and cold and dizzy by turns.
“What?” asks Eddie faintly, barely even a question.
“I’m in love with you,” Buck says again. “I didn’t know, I didn’t mean to, but I am. I am.”
“You– Right, okay,” says Eddie, so visibly buffering that it makes Buck’s heart clench a little in his chest. Of course he’s in love with Eddie. How could he possibly have let himself pretend otherwise. “Wasn’t expecting this, bud,” says Eddie, and he sounds so shocked that Buck can’t help a wry smile. Of course Eddie’s surprised. They must be the only two people in existence who didn’t already know. “I– Buck, man, you know that I care about you, but…”
“I know,” he says gently to Eddie, because he did know, but that doesn't make this moment hurt any less.
---
Post season 8, Buck confesses his feelings, Eddie lets him down as gently as he can, and they both try to figure out how to be just friends.

It’s a cruel, twisted joke from the universe, really, but it’s just the way it is. Fun, right?
No, Eddie doesn’t think so either. But that’s probably because today is his Mark Day, and most people are a bit crabby on their Mark Day. We try not to hold it against them.
Or, Eddie's soulmate is going to die today, and that's fine, really. He's never met her. It's just a cruel coincidence that Buck is struck by lightning on today of all days.
