A second passed, then Shigeo nodded. After a deep breath, he glanced up to meet Reigen’s concerned eyes. “Looking back now, I realize you… had some hard times, in your life. Correct me if I’m wrong. But I’ve been thinking about it now, as an adult. About some of the things I remember.”
It felt like the air had been sucked from the room. “Go on,” Reigen said, his voice uncharacteristically quiet.

Dazai never understood children.
He was never one himself, so he couldn't relate to anything involving a young child. The way they cried, the way they demanded attention and genuine care. How they looked at the world through a filtered lens of innocence and wonder. How they felt so strongly.
He didn't understand. He accepted he never would.
He would watch Odasaku with a curious eye. How he interacted with the orphans, entertained and indulged. How he soothed and comforted. He tried. He really did, to see things from his friend's point of view. But he never grasped it. Odasaku would look at him with understanding, softly unbridled.
“One day, I'm sure you'll experience it.”
“Experience what?”
“What it feels like to truly be human.”
Dazai didn't believe this.
Until it happened.

Whumptober 2023 Day 11: Animal Trap/Captivity/No one will find you
“Cmon, cmon, cmon,” he urges it, heart drumming and sweat on his brow and he spins around, twisting on his heel when the leaves near his head reach out and brush his skin. Wide eyed and spluttering, he sticks his phone out like a weapon, hand shuddering and half blinking screen providing less light that a match. He squares his trembling body and pulls in a breath, ready to scream or swear to scare off whatever is approaching him.
A little squirrel, chittering and happy with a nut looking thing it’s in mouth, pops out of the bushes and stares at the light with its beady eyes, tilting its head with a chirp. Reigen stares back for second, body awash with adrenaline, before slumping his shoulders and giving a shaky laugh.
“Just a squirrel,” he chuckles, feeling like a typical movie protagonist, and shakes his head. “Just a damn squirrel.”
Or
In typical Reigen fashion, the way home after after a job takes a dangerous, agonizing turn, and he finds that he is completely alone as he tries to scramble for help in the dead of night.

Summary
Whumptober 2023 Day 7: Alleyway/Radio Silence/Can you hear me?
He hadn’t noticed it, and it’s difficult to block the worming guilt in his chest that he hadn’t been aware that the dark haired, dead eyed boy hadn’t sent him a text or plopped down on the couch and started scribbling out his homework for the day. It had just been so busy. The boy wasn’t on his mind as the clock ticked and people whined and paid and babbled about nonsensical spirits.
He’s a bit confused. Normally, if Mob can’t make it in or he’s busy with something after school, though Reigen can’t really imagine what Mob would be interested in besides his body improvement club, the kid calls him or texts him and Reigen gives him a bit of a hard time, but isn’t actually bothered by it. When he thinks about it, he can’t actually remember a time when Mob didn’t at least let him know where he was or call in, even if he was just running late. Reigen hopes that that’s all it is. He’s just running late.
Or
A snowy day at Spirts n' Such, and Mob is missing. Reigen chalks it up to the weather, unwilling to consider the alternative, but a phonecall from the boy's brother spurs him into gear and he braves the weather to find his missing boy.
