Summary
Beatrice stood a little taller, squaring her shoulders. “We skiff.”
“That’s hot.”
Though she didn’t laugh, Beatrice’s body relaxed, just a little. “It’s quite cold actually, especially in open waters.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“I know it wasn’t, I was just ignoring you.” She gave Ava a small smile. “What about you, Miss America? Unless you’re the bouncy patriot who accidentally stumbled into Olympic hopeful territory?”
Ava stood as tall as she could, not expecting to have to show off that particular night. “I am bouncy, and hopeful, but definitely not by accident.” She stuck her hand out, because she felt this draw to touch Beatrice again. “Ava Silva, defender for USA Women’s Soccer.”
She took Ava’s hand tightly, a single eyebrow raised. “You’re a defender?”

Summary
Ava Silva is a beautifully disguised devil. Once she knows she has a hold on Lilith, she starts to use it.
Some part of Lilith thinks she should be upset about this, because she’s had people use their power over her before and it’s the kind of thing that’s ruined her life.
This is different though, because Ava’s power over her is different, it’s the antithesis of everything else she’s ever experienced.
Where people like her mother or Adriel would use their hold on her to make her less of who she wanted to be and more of who they needed her to be, Ava is doing the opposite.
She pushes Lilith as if she’s trying to tap into the parts of herself she’s afraid of.
What’s worse, is that Beatrice is letting her. Beatrice, Lilith thinks, is encouraging it.

Summary
Home, it still sounds so weird in her mind. She hasn’t truly had a home since she was seven years old. But this quaint town and its stunning mountain views and warm bread and warmer people have become something special to her. The small apartment she shares with Beatrice with its worn out rug, squeaky hinges, and shared bed have become something holy to her because Beatrice is there with her to do life together.

Ava finds a stray cat in the back room of the bar and fails miserably at hiding it from Beatrice.

Summary
Beatrice is on her knees, in a way that is not holy. It isn’t God who will bring Ava back to her, it’s the universe that she will bend around her if need be. Maybe life is all about sitting in the event horizon, letting the tide of fate exercise its will. But Beatrice knows fate. She has seen it in her dreams, draped in gold and wearing the smile that woke her from slumber. She has stared directly into the sun, and it’s her.
It’s her, it’s her, it’s her.
(or, it’s Beatrice against God, and Beatrice won’t lose)
