Obviously ready on her tongue, hindered by the furrow between his brows and the look in his eyes, judgement of her failure but mostly what she thinks is crushing disappointment of an opportunity lost and makes a weak attempt at a joke instead.
“I’m not finished growing yet.”
Doesn’t move, doesn’t blink, simply stares and Alina suddenly realises she can smell him, sharp winter and pine trees clinging to the back of her mouth and she does her best to swallow without making it obvious. Isn’t sure if she succeeds.
