Summary
Loki is rather used to sneaking about the palace grounds at night.
He's memorized the guard patrols down to the second and has learned how to fit into the rhythm of them as he ducks out of the royal chambers to the library to read books the librarian would never let him study in the light of day, or out to the gardens to experiment with his magic somewhere no one would think to find him, or even up to the observation tower to get a glimpse of the galaxies. There's a peace to Asgard in the middle of the night that allows him to breathe, to give voice to his most daring ideas as he wanders, a freedom that is painfully rare in the light of day.
But tonight, as he is darting past the training grounds, sticking to the tall hedges designed to block out sound from the greater grounds he hears a faint scuff of shoes. Curiously enough, the tread isn't heavy enough to be a soldier's boot and so Loki drifts a bit closer, rewarded with more shuffling and a few murmured curses in a voice that almost sounds familiar.

Summary
Lord Odin has found the perfect solution to his estate's financial troubles: his son and heir can marry his childhood friend Sif, now a fabulously wealthy heiress (and an Olympic tennis player to boot). But Thor, uninterested in the match, disappears just before the house party where he is supposed to win Sif over.
Now it's up to the rest of the family to keep Sif and her father happy while they wait for Thor to return. Loki, assigned to Sif-watching duty, spends his days helping her train for her upcoming tennis competition. There's just one problem: the more time Loki spends with Sif, the more he remembers why he was so smitten with her when they were children, and the more he thinks his father has chosen the wrong son for her to marry.
