“Hey, uh, we don’t need to do this,” Eddie says, resting his chin back on his hand, suddenly feeling exhausted by the whole situation. “Just give me the word and I’ll just walk away. Okay?”
“No, it’s not that,” Chrissy says, her words rushed and tinged with desperation. She looks up at him as he moves the metal lunchbox from the table to the seat next to him. “I don’t want you to go.”
The conviction in her voice keeps Eddie in his seat. He looks at her, again trying to gage if she’s messing with him or not, but when he sees the slight tremble of her hands as they hover carefully over the picnic table, he decides to believe her. He’s not exactly sure why. Eddie doesn’t owe Chrissy anything, and after today they’ll probably never speak again, but…
She looks so scared. So alone. And if there is one thing Eddie Munson understands, it’s being alone.
So, he stays.
