Yennefer watched the farm where she'd grown up fade as the wagon trundled farther up the hills. They were heading north, she thought. The horse snorted every now and then, and the gray-haired man- who must have been Vesemir- soothed it with a few soft words.
“Where's he taking us?” she asked, glaring at the trees.
“Mountains. We'll stop for a night or two in Kaedwen then we'll head up into the blue mountains for the winter.”

Summary
Wilbur Soot had sworn not to volunteer for the Hunger Games. His mother had begged him, on her deathbed, to make two promises: to take care of his brothers, and to never volunteer.
He'd sworn up and down that he'd never volunteer, never do that to his brothers, never ever speak up at the reaping. The ring on his middle finger was a permanent reminder of his promise. He had barely taken it off since his mother had pressed it into his palm the day he became an orphan. He hadn't even realized it was on the wrong finger until days later.

When Wilbur was thirteen, he'd promised his dying mother to protect his brothers, and to never volunteer for the hunger games. He'd never considered what to do if those promises became contradictory.

Wilbur leaned over to smack the back of his head playfully, and he ducked the blow. “Don't call it kidnapping when we're your family. Phil literally has paperwork saying you're his, I don't think it's possible to kidnap you at this point.”
Phil cackled from the front seat, leaning sideways to check traffic before pulling out. “He's got you there, Tom.”
Tommy flipped him off, making sure it was visible in the mirror, before turning his hands back to Wilbur. “You're dodging my question.”
