Summary
“Say you got married,” Robby found himself asking. “Would you wear your dress blues? Or civilian clothes?”
It had only been an idle thought, no different than any number of easy, directionless musings of the sort that often came over the two of them on mornings like this one, when no one had a shift to go to for at least thirty-six hours. Robby didn’t mean anything by it. But he regretted the words the instant they left his mouth, even before he saw the incredulous grin slide over Jack’s face.

Summary
A challenge set by the author, for the author, to break out of writer's block. Fics are rough and barely edited, not beta'd, and are meant to be more of a creative exercise than a showcase of literary prowess. But the love of Springsteen is real and serious. Each individual fic is based on lyrics and/or vibes from a specific song, and may be expanded on in the future.

Summary
Gifting someone a stethoscope at a milestone was very traditional, he knew, but some traditions should be observed. They kept you anchored to something greater than yourself. And this one was just...warm. Jack always thought of the people who'd given him his steths—Colonel Jacquemin, who'd gifted him his first Littmann when he finished residency, or Lizzie, who'd given him his current Littmann III when Adamson hired him as an attending. It was a reminder of the people who loved you, believed in you, helped you along the way, a physical token of those you carried with you.
Sure, maybe it wasn't exactly Jack's place to give one to Robby, more properly the domain of family or mentors. If Adamson had lived to retire, he would've gifted Robby a steth to celebrate his promotion, Jack was sure. Robby's family was gone, so that wasn't an option, and Jack would be damned if Robby's elevation to one of the highest posts in their field would go uncelebrated.

Summary
Robby has a CHD history — a congenital heart disease history.
After thirty years of knowing and loving (read: pining after) each other, you’d think Robby would have mentioned it before Jack is trying to get some long-awaited ass.
Alas, he did not.

Summary
“This isn’t a wheelchair,” She groans, standing again. “This is a medieval torture device, Jack.”
Jack shrugs. “It’s what I’ve got. Prosthetist’s fixing the leg.”
Her eyes narrow. “You wouldn’t let a patient go home with this, I know you.”
“I’m not a patient,” He mutters, logging into the portal and tuning her out.
She doesn’t let him. “You’re a patient right now,” She shoots back. “My patient.”
(Or, Jack’s prosthetic breaks and he needs a better wheelchair, a custom. Robby — the ATP/PT, fits him for one).

Here’s the thing—Robby has never seen Jack in anything beyond a platonic light. They have known each other for years, a span of time in which Jack was married, then widowed, wherein Robby started and stopped (albeit, entirely by her decision) dating Heather. They are friends. Best friends.
Then, three nights after the Pittfest disaster, Robby wakes up in a cold sweat, dimly aware that he has just had a sex dream about Jack fucking Abbot.
______Robby realizes that he's in love with Jack Abbot, and they figure their shit out.

Summary
"I'm not about to kill myself, Robby," Jack said, easy. "If I were going to kill myself, I wouldn't do it here, for you all to find, because that's just rude. I'd eat my gun at home like a proper soldier. Iraq vets have a system, man, it's tradition," he drawled, putting some grim humor on the last.
"Gotta be honest, man, you're not making me feel better over here," Robby said, his voice actually worried now.
"Would it help to know I'm out here because it reminds me that I want to be alive?"

Summary
"I want to be alone, Jack," Robby said, short and sharp and pissy.
Fucking great. Apparently in the 45 minutes since Jack had last seen him, Robby had gone from devastation to anger. This would be fun.
"It's nice to want things," he drawled, deliberately light. "I wanted to walk out of Iraq on my own two feet, but hey. No plan survives contact with the enemy and all that."
Robby turned then, looking at him over the top of the couch, face drawn, eyes dark in the low lights. "Yeah? You my enemy?"

Summary
Three months after PittFest, Robby is still dealing with the aftermath as he continues running the ER. Langdon is back from rehab, Jack is back to day shift, and the med students are being suspiciously nosy.
As the winter holidays approach, he tries to balance running the ER while dealing with what happened to he and Jack after being on the roof together back in September. He tries to work through things in therapy but the forced proximity to Jack only fuels the spiral in his mind about what they are (and what they aren't.)

Summary
Robby sagged a little, another tiny rush of air out. Jack pretended not to notice any of it even as it slid through him, his hypothesis gaining evidence, firming in his mind.
No, Jack didn't think anyone ever touched Robby.
He was going to change that.

Summary
Jack had never been a hot-headed man, even in his younger years. He'd seen how anger controlled his father, made him a mean and volatile man, and swore to himself at a very young age that he would never be like him. It wasn't that he didn't get angry, because he did, but he was always in control. Always carefully calm and calculated. Trained in hand-to-hand combat, in both lethal and non-lethal defense and offense, a skilled marksman. Honed into the perfect soldier, and then wholly abandoned by his government when he was no longer of use to them. Still, he wasn't quick to anger, even through the PTSD and flashbacks. Mood stabilizers helped, but he was more prone to panic, depression, and suicidal ideation than violence towards others without them.
Right now, however, he was having a hard time keeping that in mind. Not when some other man was smiling at Samira like he knew he was going to take her home.

Summary
“Are you lonely, Jack?” She looks at him, the corner of her mouth quirking up into a smile that doesn’t touch her eyes. “Because I think I’ve spent the last few years pretending that I’m not and it’s the one thing I’ve. . .” A huff of a humorless laugh. “Failed spectacularly at.”
Jack frowns, deep enough to feel his forehead creasing. “You’re too hard on yourself.”
She tilts her head, the smile the same. “You didn’t answer my question.”
Jack has made it a point in his life to never lie to Samira, and he’s done a damn good job of it. He is many things, but a liar is not one of them—save for the rare occasion where a lie could change someone’s life. When it comes to Samira, he has no secrets. After all, it’s not lying if she’s never asked him, specifically, about his feelings for her, so there’s never a reason to brandish that particular truth. He’s pretty good at finding loopholes, too.
So he doesn’t lie to her now. “Yeah. I am.”
