Summary
Piltover is the City of Progress, but its politics are less than progressive. Jayce Talis, newly promoted to Councilor, is determined to change that, but the rest of Piltover stands in his way. By rooting out corruption and fighting for better conditions in Zaun, Jayce has placed a target on his back. After an attempt on his life, Viktor decides to take Jayce’s protection into his own hands, crafting a suit of metal and steel and Hextech. There’s only one problem—Jayce has no idea who the scary robot man who keeps rescuing him is, and Viktor is determined to keep it that way.
But as the danger around Jayce increases, and the Machine Herald’s renown and infamy in Zaun and Piltover grow, can Viktor keep up this double life? Or are the rumors of the Machine Herald and Jayce just putting them in more danger?
Meanwhile, Jayce finds himself torn—so much face-to-mask contact with the Machine Herald has awakened a burgeoning desire inside him that he has long thought he held only for his partner, who has no idea of his feelings. Will Jayce be forced to choose between the best friend he ever had and his new, mysterious savior?

“At least something beautiful grew inside you,” Jayce muses. “He kept you here in the sunshine, full of flowers.”
He shifts, moving closer, curling his body around the kneeling corpse. “Were you scared, at the end?” He blinks, looks down as he swallows back a lump. “Did you still have hope? That you could save him, before he turned you into this—or did you know he was gone?”
Keeping his head pillowed in the moss of his counterpart’s shoulder, Jayce reaches out to gently brush the back of his knuckles against the outstretched hand. “I hope, at least…” He sighs, drawing the words up from deep in his chest like poison from a wound. It’s just a dream—he can admit this in a dream. “If I fail, do you think he’ll grow flowers for me too?”
Silence, undercut with the buzz of insects and the roar of the storm below answers him.
“Ha,” Jayce says, huffing a laugh. “Yeah, probably not.”

Jayce dreams of his own corpse, kneeling in defeat for eternity in the ruined future. And then, eventually, he dreams of something more.

Weeks after Jayce wakes up on the roof of the Hexgates alone save for a mildly concussed Ekko, he is deep in mourning for his partner, seemingly lost to the Arcane. Jayce is still grieving when alarms sound out over the city. Something has been spotted on the horizon—a giant metal construct with strange gold and greyish-purple skin—and it’s headed right towards Piltover.

Viktor had not expected the student to be a Vastaya hybrid when he’d entered the half-destroyed apartment. It is not as though the chimeric peoples were not present in Piltover, but they were far more common in Zaun. He’d noted it as an interesting oddity—especially a lepus variety, they were somewhat rare these days—and then moved on, more focused on ensuring Jayce was taken safely into custody.
It wasn’t until later, after they had argued the possibilities of Hextech in front of the Council, after they had established a working partnership and were well on the way to building the Hexgates that Viktor had finally contemplated the realities of partnering with a Vastaya.

“Oh my god, Viktor,” Jayce yells, lunging for the book. Viktor laughs and rolls backwards on the chair, keeping the book out of his grasp. “What the fuck—”
In which—to Jayce’s horror—someone is writing very popular, very raunchy, very unauthorized romance novels about Piltover’s newest celebrity, Jayce is not a virgin but it’s been so long since he got laid he might as well be, and Viktor is not a shirtless, muscular hero from the cover of a romance novel but that isn’t stopping Jayce from imagining him as one.

“He will come back to us,” Viktor says softly. Mel grabs his hand and grips it with surprising strength.
“Thank you,” she says. “For saving him when I could not.”
Viktor blinks in surprise. “Mel—”
She shakes her head harshly. “I have seen death, Viktor. I know the smell of it. Whatever it is you did—” Brilliant green eyes flick back upwards. “It saved his life. That’s all that matters.”
Jayce dies in the attack on the Council. Viktor brings him back.
When he wakes up, Jayce is changed by the Hexcore—and he is not so quick to abandon a loyal follower as Viktor would be, were their roles reversed.

Viktor stops abruptly mid-sentence. It’s probably because Jayce has leaned forward to rest his head against Viktor’s collarbone, jutting out prominently under the thin black undersuit. Jayce closes his eyes and sighs contentedly, nuzzling closer.
“Fuck, I wish I had a camera right now,” Vi says, clearly trying to stifle a laugh. “Thanks, doc. I’ll get out of your hair before Jayce says or does something even more embarrassing. Stop him if he tries to bleach his hair, yeah? He was really fixated on that earlier.”
“Thank you, Vi,” Viktor replies in a strangled tone.
Jayce is a pit fighter. Viktor is the Machine Herald. That makes them both sound a lot cooler than they actually are.

No one paid much attention when a young man from the Undercity was expelled from Piltover Academy after having been found to have forged his enrollment.
Significantly more notice is paid five years later, however, when one Jayce Talis is expelled after his trial by the Piltover Council. In this world, there is no keen-eyed assistant to the Dean to read through his notebook and to talk him off the ledge—but something draws him towards Zaun, where he gets his ass kicked and is rescued by an unusual man. Against all odds, Jayce manages to find Viktor anyways.

Summary
Viktor reaches out a hand, unable to stop himself from touching. He intended to rest it on Jayce’s shoulder, to kneel down beside him but before he can do that Jayce lets out a soft exhale and all but throws his head into Viktor’s open palm. He slumps, face pressed into his hand like an obedient dog greeting its master, hungry gaze trained on Viktor’s face.
Viktor may have slightly underestimated what weeks without any human contact have done to Jayce’s psyche.
