Summary
Whisper knows that she has a crush on Tangle, and that's a problem. The long dark shadow of her past meant that she could only push people away for their safety, but now those ghosts have been finally put to rest and there's no more excuses—the issue is, though, that she only knows how to let people worm their way into her heart, not how to ask them out.
Tangle, meanwhile, doesn't even realize she has a crush on Whisper. Someone help that girl out, it's embarrassing.

Ralsei blinks. Attempts to contextualize his surroundings: he is on the floor of Kris’s room. Various empty chip bags surround him. Kris is sprawled out at his side on their back. Their phone is balanced against a tissue box and currently playing a movie. Ralsei reaches out to pause it—Thelma and Louise. Right. He…remembers that. Halfway, at least.
Kris says, “oh, did I wake you up? Sorry.”
“No,” Ralsei says, “or, yes, or—I don’t know.” He pauses, swallows. “What were you saying?”
“Me. You. Road trip.” Kris nudges him. “I don’t care where. Just—away. You know? We’re adults. Nobody can stop us!”

i'm not even a huge deltarunehead or anything but i found this fic searching for fics that mentioned Sidney Gish and like-- god. god. GOD!!! absolutely incredible fic. i adore it so much. so so very much. the imagery is so evocative, the dialogue cagey and avoidant and broken but -- in the same breath -- hopeful or wistful or yearning, clawing desperately towards something. and it's so beautiful. and it's so sad.
it's about when you try so, so very hard for something and it just can't work, not for lack of trying but because the game was rigged and you can't call foul. and it's about being stuck in that little margin and finding something beautiful-enough in it, enough to stand back up, tell the ref to give you another shot, maybe-- maybe-- maybe.
it's a fic i think a lot about. i've always loved bad-idea roadtrips. i want to write something like this some day, and if i get very lucky i'll do it half as good as this.

just absolutely wonderful. i love the format, i love how it ties together two characters that don't seem at all related at first but over the course of the fic you start going "Wait. Wait. There are Things Tying Them Together..." it's so masterfully done. all-timer for sure.

absolutely breathtaking fic. truly feels completely in-tune with the source material, having something somehow more intimate than a dialogue with it. it's raw and vulnerable in such a special little way. i show it to everyone i know who's finished reading Dungeon Meshi because it truly feels like required reading. it's basically a canon epilogue to me. i hope it comes back from the war one day...
