Carl didn’t answer. It was an awfully big question for a horse.
“Maybe,” Tommy mumbled.

The edge of his bed dipped as Joel sat down. “Little birdy told me you weren’t feeling great.” As Etho’s eyes adjusted to the light, he could see Joel clearer and clearer, but still shadowed. He was wearing a green hoodie, dark grey sweatpants (maybe brown?), and his hair was loose over his ears and forehead. He reached forward and pushed back Etho’s sweaty bangs. “And I thought it would be pretty un-cool of me to let my boyfriend sniffle and sneeze alone in his room.”

“I dunno mate, you should ask him,” the Captain said, a little faintly. Tommy’s row of primary feathers twitched under his beady gaze. In his mind, his instincts were shouting at him: showneck showneck tuckfeathers tucktuck, asking him to submit, and he visualized beating the thoughts back with a machete.
“He’s tiny,” the phantom chimed. “He could have slipped through the air vent.”
“Hey,” Tommy snapped, voice hoarse from the stress. He shut his mouth immediately. Talking back to capturers/potential torturers was stupid, what the hell was he thinking?
The phantom brightened. “Oh, Phil, he bites! Can we keep him?”
The Captain—what kind of name was Phil?—glared. “No.” Then his eyes flicked to Tommy’s wings. “… Maybe.”
Or: Tommy just wanted to commit crimes and get bank. SBI see a small, shiny avian and immediately break 13 intergalactic codes to claim him.

A great clunking sound—the door closing. Papa and Mama must have been the last to get on, Tommy thought. He kicked mindlessly, and cried louder. They would find him if they heard him.
The ship began to rumble with a great creaking noise and his cries faded into gasping hiccups. His eyes were very heavy all of the sudden. He sniffled and wiped his nose. It was easy to fall asleep. He would find his family when he woke up.
(Tommy was asleep in his chair against the window as the ship whirred and churned noisily into space, so he missed this moment: When the surface of Kasheu—slowly shrinking behind them into the starry darkness—bubbled, hissed, cracked, and the whole planet cracked in two, then four, then eight, then a million tiny pieces flung into the darkness. It took one whole minute for the sound to reach the ship, and the noise was so loud it reverberated the metal walls. Tommy didn’t wake up.)

There was a beat of silence, and then the little girl wrapped around the fucking former Crown Prince’s legs decided she was no longer going to act shy, and broke the tension with a loud, “WELCOME NEW NEIGHBOUR!!”
“Oh, thank you,” Simon rushed out, turning his attention to the girl because it was much easier than staring at the man she was with. The girl gave him a toothy grin, to which Simon noticed she was (adorably) missing some of her bottom teeth. He gave her a smile in response, and that seemed to give her the confidence to thrust a plastic tupperware containing star-shaped cookies at him. “What’s this?”
“Cookies, silly!” she explained, holding them higher as if he hadn’t noticed the contents yet.
