Edit (11/24/25): On hiatus, I promise it is not abandoned. Slowly reworking the draft.
An AU in which things go horribly wrong in the fight against Jun Wu (book 8 spoilers) and Xie Lian ultimately succumbs to the whims of him. The reason purely being to keep Hua Cheng safe from harm.
With a “contract” made right before everyone’s eyes, with Xie Lian’s head bashed to unrecognizable features, Feng Xin and Mu Qing attempt to stop it - But Hua Cheng. Oh, Hua Cheng.. He is frozen in place, almost as if his life had just been sucked from his already ghostly form, and he helplessly witnesses this accursed world forsake his love once again, for him.

Just a Modern AU where Xie Lian’s body changes with his new life. No longer scrawny and malnourished, he gains a healthy amount of chub. He doesn’t notice how his lean muscles soften, his face filling, and Hua Cheng is SO happy to continue his transformation from uncared to very very well loved.

Summary
[Modern AU] Xie Lian lives in a little town outside of the city - he’s not really a cowboy, but he owns some land, and uses it as a sort of sanctuary for the animals he collects (like his canon scrap collecting, except he collects what people deem “useless animals” + actual scrap collecting ofc!).
Hua Cheng happens to live in said city, the head of a newly successful conglomerate. He’s exhausted from paper after paper, meeting after meeting, deciding to abandon his work and passing it to Yin Yu (rip…). He initially decided to drive to a further location, a far penthouse in the countryside, but his car - as good and expensive as it is- breaks down in some shabby looking town.
He starts bitching and trying to call Yin Yu, but no signal! He decides, begrudgingly, to wander in the town to find some help. And then he ends up finding the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen. On a horse. Riding directly past him. No, AT him!!!

Will wants to keep his head down, he really does, but he accidentally stares at the stranger and blinks.
This is going to be all awkward, right?
“Just gotta-” the boy starts and sets the heavy box on the table. “Put that down,” he says and drops down onto his seat beside Will.
Will blinks and the boy stares back at him. “Come on, do something,” he says. “Or do you just sit there?”
-Chance is actually just curious about Will Byers, but in the span of one week, he gets pulled into the mystery that is the quiet boy from his school.
Because a lot can happen in seven days.

He was right here. They couldn't have found a body because as poorly as he felt at the moment, he was still alive. Still breathing.

Summary
At some point Will realised his hand was still over Chance’s. Maybe it was the liquor sitting heavy in his system, or maybe it was just sheer dumb courage, but he felt himself gently shift his hand to the side, moving until it sat flush beside Chance’s.
Maybe the alcohol was clouding Will’s senses, but he could have sworn Chance’s fingers shifted to brush his.
