Shane is still learning the rules. Like, watching Naruto is fine, but My Neighbor Totoro is weird and also gay. Salmon at a restaurant is not the same as shiozake at home. When you go to Mitch Bergeron’s house you have to ask if you should take off your shoes or not. If you just do it, people will look at you funny.
The most important thing is hockey. There’s nothing more Canadian than hockey, not even poutine or ginger ale. Being Canadian is easy if you’re good at hockey.
If Shane could play for the Montreal Metros—or even for McGill, like his dad—he’ll really be just like everyone else. He’ll be better.

Maybe he just likes it when Rose looks at him like that, awestruck, like he's scored a hattrick. He doesn't know anyone else who would be this impressed by his knowledge of having sex with men, which is unfair, seeing how long he's worked to build it.
Maybe that's why he ends up where he does, one arm extended to stick two fingers in Rose's mouth, her pink lipgloss sticky, smearing around his fingers, three of her fingers pressed as far as they can go into his, both of them drooling and stifling little snorts of laughter.

Ilya’s eyes are unquestionably fond. “No,” he says, and he pulls at Shane’s arms until Shane collapses again, falling onto Ilya’s chest once more, this time with his face exposed to open air.
“Ah, my Shane,” Ilya says, and wraps his arms tightly around Shane, tight enough that he feels cradled. He says something else too, something in Russian that Shane doesn’t recognize.
“You do,” Shane says, just to hear Ilya deny it again. He wants the reassurance, wants Ilya to tell him that he’s good, that he'd be good even if he turned Michael away. “It is evil. I shouldn’t want to hit the poor kid asking for my help.”

Now, Shane was off shooting a video while Ilya did the dishes, and Ilya already knew the way it would require Shane to drag his public face up from the depths of his stomach, the work it would take him to shed it afterwards, the way it would taint this evening.
