Summary
Lillibett wakes up in a double bed, the warm weight of another person at her side, the sort of pleasant soreness between her legs that means she really doesn’t feel like moving. She needs to, though, driven by a reason she can’t quite place. What time is it, anyway? There aren’t any clocks in the room, and the building below her is quiet but not completely still. The body next to her - she knows whose it is, but doesn’t want to acknowledge it yet - is peaceful, but she can listen to their breath and hear that they’re awake.
“Mornin’,” says The Cheery Man, oddly chipper for what Lillibett is sure must be an early hour. “It’s ten,” he then says. “Thought you might’n’t want to sleep the whole morning away.”
“Bleurgh,” Lillibett says, intelligently. He’s right, though. Honestly, she wishes he’d woken her up earlier.

Summary
Her hands go to the leather belt wrapped around him, undoing buckles with sharp, efficient motions. He can’t think, too caught up in the feeling of her against him, of the knowledge of what she could do - what he’s seen her do, albeit in different contexts. She’d pinched her abdomen shut in front of him once, stopped her wet, pink insides from spilling over his pub floor.
“No,” he says, eventually. “I don’t- No tricks.” The belt comes off, and he kisses her, grinds into the softness of her thigh, smearing against her skin. “Just this- me, you, no magic.” He can’t imagine needing anything else, not knowing the whole truth of her, the way that she smells, the way that she smiles, the way that her skin tastes under his tongue.
She laughs into his neck. “How sweet,” she says, and if it weren’t for the way she’s staring at him, gaze sticky with affection, he’d take it as condescension. “You like me more than the rest of them,” she then adds, incomprehensible. “No one else takes me as I am.”

Summary
It's another morning. Isn't it always? The watery light of the Neath, the damp air, the pervasive aura of misery and mystery… Lillibett has woken up to it for months, now. Maybe she'll get used to it, one day.
One thing she won't get used to so quickly, perhaps, is the guilt. Three months ago, the Cheery Man had faced off against the Last Constable - safe, thanks to her efforts, but without any thanks to give for them. The Constable had died with blue-tinged lips and a little round moue of horror on her face, and Lillibett frankly wishes she had felt worse about killing a woman a scant few years older than her than she had about the way the Cheery Man had looked at her, after.
