May ignores her mom, eyes looking around the crowd as more women raise their paddles.
“Who’s got fourteen hundred dollars?”
May’s heart pounds as Ravi walks up and down the stage.
“Fourteen hundred right here. Alright, who’s got sixteen hundred dollars?”
She raises her paddle one more time.
“Going once, going twice… sold for sixteen hundred dollars to the woman in red. Thank you very much.”
The smile Ravi sends her way is heart-stopping, setting off fireworks in May’s stomach, she smiles back and reminds herself to take a breath. Her head is spinning, still a cacophony of jealous, possessive thoughts at the other bidders, and disbelief that she kept bidding and won. She finally relaxes into her seat when Ravi walks off the stage.

Summary
Tommy stared down at the picture and didn’t move an inch as he tried to process what he was seeing.
It was of Evan, his pale skin glistening with sweat as he smiled, holding the door open for someone outside of his apartment building.
Mason put down another picture and then another, making the cold shock in Tommy’s veins turn brittle with each one being presented to him. It was obvious from the photographs that Evan hadn’t known his picture was being taken. It had to have been captured with a long lens of some kind. Evan, at his apartment building. Evan, by his Jeep outside of the grocery store. Evan, in his uniform, taking out the trash at the back of the firehouse, alone and surrounded by shadows.
“I really wished you’d said yes, man.” Mason leaned back and tipped the picture up to stare at him. “Cute kid. Got that birthmark thing? He’s a firefighter too? Calls himself Buck, right? Let’s take this somewhere else, huh? You can tell me all about him.”
An old army buddy of Tommy’s comes into town with a proposition. When Tommy refuses, he learns that Evan Buckley is a pretty good tool for persuasion.

“Yeah, and I’m going to propose by the end of it. No way is Tommy beating me to the punch.” Buck throws down a wad of bills - enough for the beers and apps and a sizable tip before he’s grabbing Hen by the hand and pulling her up.
“Wait, can I at least finish my drink?” Hen cries out, reaching for her glass.
“No time, Wilson. I’m ordering an uber.”

OR: When Buck and Tommy become aware that the other is also planning to propose, they have thoughts; mainly that they need to be the one to propose first. So they move up their timeline to that very evening. It's not easy to plan a proposal in a couple hours, especially when trying to avoid your significant other, but fortunately they'll have a lot of help to pull it off. Shenanigans ensue.
