Summary
In the spring of 1944, the 104th Medical Battalion of the United States Army is disbanded, and its men reassigned to various infantry companies in preparation for their invasion of occupied France. For First Lieutenant Novak, this is less than helpful, as he has so far met his platoon’s designated medic a grand total of twice, and has both times found Sergeant Winchester to be the optimum combination of reckless, arrogant, and downright insufferable so as to make cohesive platoon function near impossible. I have often wondered how J2M would reboot the series, assuming they ever do, based on how the show ended. I'm not a fan of the finale, but we're stuck with that crapfest being canon whether we like it or not.
So I said to myself, "Self, if you had to continue the story from that exact point, what would you do?" This is what emerged.
There's angst. I made myself cry writing it. There will be fluff. And smut.

Cass makes a disgruntled noise, “This is… of a more personal nature Dean.”
“There – there has been some confusion lately.” He states, shifting uneasily. “And all sources of information tell me that it’s – one thing. But you always tell me the contrary.”
Oh shit… had Cass figured out that ketchup isn’t actually a vegetable?
“I um, talked to Sam. He wasn’t much help. He seemed more panicked than me actually.”
“What did you talk about?” Dean asks.
“About what it means to be brothers.” He admits shakily. Dean feels his heart drop. He knows exactly where this conversation is headed. Cass had finally realised that something about their relationship is different to the one he has with Sam. And now he’s here to call Dean out on the discrepancies – the large disparities between their relationships.
“Cass – I can explain –”

Cass talks to Sam about the difference between brotherly feelings and romantic feelings and makes a mix-tape ... of sorts.

His phone rang and his watch ticked and the sticky blood on the shoulder of his jacket dried, and he just sat there, tears that he didn't even bother wiping away sliding off his cheeks, and Cas' words echoing through his head again and again.
"Happiness isn't in the having, it is in just being, just saying it."
"You changed me Dean."
"Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam, I cared about Jack."
The outer door clanged and the loud noise managed to echo all the way through the bunker to the dungeon, the sound of large feet on the steps and a low murmuring of voices followed it. He didn't react. What was he going to say? How was he going to tell the others that Cas was- Cas was- Cas wasn't around anymore, especially when Dean himself could scarcely believe it.
