Set days after the events in Shadow (1.16), Dean and Sam are trying to get as far from Chicago as they can when an unexpected and yet familiar arrival throws their world into disarray. Dean didn't ask for a glimpse into his and Sam's future, and he's still not sure he wants one, especially not when his future self starts talking about angels and miracles, like either of those things could possibly exist.
"Okay, let's say you're right. Let's say at some point I'm going to travel into the past, meet myself, and then force myself to take a cross-country road trip with myself so that I can find some dude I refuse to talk about. The hell, Sam? Does any of that make sense?"

But there’s one thing no one knows about him: that, over twenty years ago, he used to live next to none other than Dean Winchester – back then a brash and loud-mouthed boy and nowadays a huge movie star and Hollywood’s sweetheart.
Castiel never bothered to tell anyone about his childhood friend because frankly, who would believe him? Probably even Dean himself already forgot about his former awkward and weird neighbor, so Castiel seriously doesn’t see any point in mentioning the whole thing ever.
But then an interview on national TV happens where Dean reveals way more about his past than ever before … and Castiel - as well as the rest of the world - suddenly realizes that he left a much bigger impact on Dean’s life than he originally thought.

As Crowley shifted gears, the Bentley slid to a stop so smooth it felt unreal. He turned to grin at the brothers over his shoulder.
“See? Wasn’t so bad,” Crowley said, all smug satisfaction as he killed the engine.
Sam was gripping the door handle like it was a lifeline. His hair was sticking up in three different directions, and his eyes were the wide, hollow kind of haunted. Dean didn’t look much better — he blinked a few times, checked that he still had all his limbs, then let out a shaky breath.
“Not so bad?” Dean’s voice cracked halfway through. “You call that a drive?? I’ve fought ghosts that were less terrifying!”
Crowley stretched lazily, looking immensely pleased with himself. “You survived. Bit of excitement never killed anyone.”
Sam groaned. “You nearly proved that wrong.”

Sam and Dean try to summon Crowley... but get the wrong demon. Instead, they get an English Dracula knock-off, who apparently know Castiel a lot more than any regular demon should.

Dean swallowed drily again, feeling his tongue heavy and weird inside his mouth, but he still managed to say, “Seriously, Cas, I... I need this. I really do. And you’re the only one who can do it. You’re the only one I trust to do this.” The hunter’s voice sounded far too hoarse, still lacking the confidence he wished to convey, and he licked his lips, looking down, focusing his gaze on a particular spot on the sheets. He fiddled with a loose thread he found there, feeling that difficulty to sit still for too long making itself known once more. He cleared his throat, and tried again, “And this is the easiest way, too. It just solves everything. You can check the damage Michael did. You can try to dig up some memories, to see if I can remember how I got this scar. And you can make sure that... that he’s really gone.” His voice did fail this time, throat feeling dry and tight, and he swallowed again to try and fix that, but it did very little to help.
The slightest hint of a feeble, empty smile tugged the corner of Dean's mouth upward, words coming out far too low and weak when he added, “Three birds, one stone, right?”
As if this really were that simple.

Cas had one hand curled over his stomach, one grinding against his forehead, and his eyes were darting everywhere. Dean couldn’t catch his gaze. “I n-need to find—I need to get—safe.”
“Let me help. It’s me, Cas. It’s me.”
Something in Cas’s expression calmed, for a moment, but then he looked like he was on the verge of tears. “It’s me, we’re family,” he said, eyes finally looking at Dean straight-on, intense.

When Dean nearly runs over an injured Castiel on the way back from meeting Metratron at the end of 08x21, it doesn't take long to realize something is seriously wrong with his friend. More than he'd realized, more than Cas can hide. He can't speak, can't stand, can't remember things. Dean will have to swallow the bitter feelings he's been harboring since the crypt and help him, or Cas might not make it through the night. But if he does pull through, maybe Dean will get another chance to make Cas understand what he's been trying to say.

'You already do, Cas', Dean thinks. “It’s okay, bud,” he slurs instead. Feeling warm and sleepy lowers all of his guards and, as true exhaustion begins to creep up on him, so does an unsettling feeling that Dean doesn’t know how to explain. It’s like Dean and Cas aren’t alone in the room, someone else watching and breathing down Dean’s neck from the shadows of his dreams.
“Cas,” Dean breathes, a tight feeling in his chest. “What if he’s still here?”

“You wanted to die?” Cas tips his head to the side, eyelids shuttering, mouth drawing tight. Just like the first night they met. It’s nostalgic, in a way. Dean’s half tempted to run him through for old time’s sake.
“If you were out of the Empty,” Dean says loudly, talking over him, “then you’d come down and save me, right? And if you weren’t, then I figured Heaven was as good a place as any to get a rescue started. But I guess I overestimated you, Cas. ‘Cause I’m dead, and you’re right here. So talk me through it, okay?”

“Yes.” Jack is nodding, smiling, all gap-toothed and kindergarten positivity.
“And the only parts of us the Empty would see are whatever dead leaves the angels and demons left in our gutters?” Dean raises his eyebrows.
“Exactly.”
He lets out a low whistle. There’s a living warmth finally coming back into his complexion. Not done yet, Winchester, still one more rescue mission. “It’s gotta be me. I’m going.”

Jimmy acts like Cas’s guide about human stuff and gets low-key protective of him and doesn’t let the boys treat him like shit. Also, he doesn’t let Cas make dumb mistakes like hiding things from the boys and he forces them to talk about things instead.
This is going to be a collection of short drabbles where each chapter is a separate story and can be read individually. Eventual Destiel.
