“I didn’t break in,” Dennis protests, sounding mildly put out. “You gave me a key.”
“Yeah,” Robby grumbles. “For emergencies.”
“This is an emergency,” Dennis shrugs. He takes off his jacket and drapes it over the back of the chair.
“It’s not an emergency,” Robby sighs. “It’s just a strained muscle.”
“I don’t know,” Dennis says, staring down at him from narrowed eyes. “Looks like an emergency to me.”

He thinks very little about the night of the assault. He thinks far too much about the morning after, about Robby’s hand on his wrist, Robby’s arm around his shoulder, Robby’s mouth against his hair, Robby’s fingers sliding a needle into his vein.
He wonders if a therapist would call that a trauma response or a coping mechanism, and decides that he much prefers not knowing what they would say.
