Cherry cleared his throat and tried again. “Have you ever—”
“No, I, uh, heard you,” Joe fumbled, mind racing. “Uh, giving or receiving?”
Cherry blinked back in surprise. “I assumed you would give—”
“You know what, it doesn’t matter,” Joe interrupted. He hadn’t had sex with a guy, mostly because there was only one guy he ever wanted to have sex with and he was currently sitting next to Joe on the couch, staring very intently and asking very bizarre, out-of-character questions.
Joe had fantasized about this happening in a million different ways. Yet somehow he was totally unprepared for Cherry staring straight at him and asking, “Would you have sex with me?”

Cherry blinked rapidly, whether because he was calculating the date or holding back tears, Joe wasn’t sure.
“But…” Cherry trailed off, then tried again. “You’re leaving the day before your birthday?”
“Oh.” Joe hadn’t really paid much attention. “Yeah, I guess so. Huh.”
“You’re…leaving?”
“Yes?” Joe asked, not really knowing what the big deal was or why Cherry had apparently short-circuited. “You knew this. I’ve talked about it for months—”
“I didn’t think you’d actually do it!”
“Why do you think I’ve been trying to learn Italian?”
“To impress girls?” Cherry fired back. “Same reason you do fucking everything else?”
