If this were a different story, Zack thinks, he would be using his last moments to remember kind, green eyes and a sweet smile. He would be staring out into the raining sky, life running out of him, while making peace with the fact that he would never see his first love again. If this were a different story, Zack would not be left empty-handed, crying out as his friend stumbles away into the remnants of a battlefield. He would not be praying for that blond head to turn, aching to capture the final sight of a cherished face before locking it behind two lids.
No, this does not feel like a fitting end to this story at all―and Zack overflows with the one childish thought that this is unbearably unfair. In the rare moments that he, as any soldier must, contemplated his death, he never imagined that he would die alone.

“Embrace your dreams, and, whatever happens, protect your honor as SOLDIER.” The voice sent a shiver of painful familiarity down Cloud's spine. “Well, okay, you never made SOLDIER...but it’s what’s in here that counts.”
Cloud swallowed past the tightness in his throat, pushing aside the familiar sting behind his eyes as tears began to form. He had dreams about Zack but that’s all they were, dreams. This was different. He was awake and in the middle of a fight that was not only to save his own life, but to save the planet. He had no idea what was happening but he didn’t care. There was only one thing Cloud cared about.
“Zack,” he whispered. His voice cracked, making the disbelief and hopelessness audibly evident.
“Well, you need a hand with him?” Zack asked.
“Yes.”

Zack was easy going. So easy going that he’d gathered a bit of a rumour of being ‘unrestrained’. It wasn’t unheard of that he’d disappear from outings. Rumours separated into popular theories as to with whom, tendencies and even genders, and he never asked Zack about his partying habits. It wasn’t his business.
“Hey, have I ever let you down before?”
“We’ve never been out before.”
“Fine!” Zack poked his head out the bathroom. Spikes were pointing everywhere, it looked ridiculous. “This is your birthday! I promise I’ll keep my eyes on the prize.”

For all that he believes in him, part of Zack doesn’t want to have faith in Cloud. A part of him wants Cloud to fail, wants him to fail so badly that SOLDIER and mako and swords never get anywhere near him. Wants Cloud’s eyes to stay endlessly blue and bright in a way that’s his, wants Cloud whole and safe and tucked against him like this forever.
Wants Cloud far, far away from dead mentors and bloodied hands and scars that look like the gridlines of maps.
But more than anything, Zack wants Cloud happy. So he sucks it up and figures he can at least teach him something that keeps him safe.

The man Tifa speaks of has plagued his nightmares for the last year, nowhere to be seen in the light of day or in the faces of his family. Sephiroth is no longer a part of Cloud. Sephiroth can no longer tear apart his visage and reach into the caverns of his existence, crushing everything in sight like a bloody, wilted carnation. Sephiroth is no more when it comes to battling with death before he gets a chance to live. Sephiroth is gone. But Zack and Aerith… Cloud can’t say the same for.
He hopes he never has to.

There’s a lump forming in his throat at the mention of Aerith, and just the thought of Zack arguing with the Planet—of all life—to come see him again, makes his legs feel weak. He’s stronger than this, is supposed to be stronger than this, but Cloud can’t seem to hold back the sound of a sob coming up his lungs.

As if he could move. With eyes the size of a mustard seed, Cloud slowly glances over to his left, beyond his far reaches, where Zack stands. He’s near the edge, standing tall, firm, both of his hands held out as if to emphasize Cloud not to move. But he seems so far away. Even if there’s only 10 meters that separates them, it feels like 50.
The cold makes his nose sting. He feels it drip. He doesn’t dare move to wipe it away. If breathing deep made the ice crack then moving is definitely out of the question.

Right, Cloud was there too, looking like a drowned cat with how hard the downpour was. Zack was glad to finally see him conscious. He remembered giving him the Buster Sword, then everything went dark.
The next time he woke, he was in a hospital. Sitting at his bedside was a much different Cloud, a much older Cloud compared to when he saw him last.
