Summary
It’s only 1940. The war has only been waging properly for a little while, and shows no signs of letting up. If Mosley and the fascists are anything to go by, the Nazis have a lot in store for this war. Days are long, but the nights are so much longer.
He smells like death, like burnt. It reminds him of long nights in France wishing for death. It reminds him of days in the medical tents hearing the desperate dying screams of men burnt half dead. The men who never made it through the night.

Summary
It had been fine, at first. Living in supported accommodation while he gets back on his feet. It’s what he’d insisted on after the threats his father had made. And he supposes he was stable. Or at least more stable than he had been in years. With a show in a radio station!
And then things had started to fade. The grief had gotten worse as he’d gotten further from Fergus’ memory, and his therapist had suggested a slight change in his medication.

As much as your grief will allow.” Her voice is soft in contrast to how she’d been speaking to him recently with the kind of bitter tone that had taken over since his return from America. She speaks to him now like she’s his big sister, looking after her kid brother after a nightmare. It’s what he’d done to her after their mother died. Looked after her. But they were kids back then, dealing with a loss greater than anything they’d experienced. And Polly. Polly had looked after the lot of them.

Summary
After a disastrous final shift on July 4, Robby leaves for his sabbatical.
Eight days later, somewhere in the Badlands, he awakens to a dozen missed calls and messages from back home. Something terrible has happened. Frank Langdon has been shot, and he might not make it.
Consumed by worry and by guilt, Robby returns to Pittsburgh, the memory of his last, terrible conversation with Frank playing on a loop in his head.
He hopes it is not too late to make amends of his own.
“Is he dead?” Robby manages to rasp out. His body is curling in on itself. He can feel himself unravelling. It’s too familiar. It’s all too familiar. This can’t be happening. “Is Frank fucking dead, Dana?”
